"Acushnet Apple and Peach festival"

ACUSHNET — Homemade pies, crafts and music drew hundreds of people to the first day of the 27th annual Apple Peach Festival yesterday.
Warm, sunny weather greeted the crowds as they turned out for one of the last hurrahs of the summer, with booths behind the Long Plain Museum and along Main Street offering a variety of food and crafts.
People eyed the locally grown produce and home-baked pies, relaxed at picnic tables under a tent and listened to the music of groups such as Walk the Line, a Johnny Cash cover band that gave the festival a taste of country.

Local band pays tribute to the late Johnny Cash

By SEAN MCCARTHY, Standard-Times correspondent

"He can make you laugh or he can make you cry. He was the Elvis of country music," says Bill Kirby, guitarist and lead singer for Walk the Line Band, a Johnny Cash tribute band based in New Bedford.
"Even young people are beginning to buy his records. He's recorded with (famed rock producer) Rick Rubin, recently covering songs by bands like Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails.
"His music can appeal to anyone."
The band consists of artists Bill Kirby and bassist Robert Girouard, guitarist MarkThompson and drummer Kevin Medeiros. Walk the Line debuted by headlining at September's Apple/Peach Festival in Acushnet. .

The show is based upon a legendary point in Cash's career -- five sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden in 1969. The band performs Cash's catalog chronologically, including his gospel, rockabilly, bluegrass, country and rock 'n' roll days.
The band is enamored of Cash's rebel attitude.

"Johnny Cash can't be categorized," Bill Kirby says. "He played so many styles. The only thing you need, is the love and respect of the music.
"Johnny Cash proved that less is best musically."
But Mr. Cash was a prolific lyricist, which means that Mr. Kirby's singing role is demanding. He rehearses with a book of Cash's words -- the band plays as many as 40 of Cash's songs, and their show lasts nearly two hours.
The band points out that Cash's subject matter can range from a song about a dog to a song about Vietnam.
"He spoke honestly," Bill Kirby says. "He wasn't a Republican or Democrat. He just wanted to solve our problems.
"He had a voice and feeling that are so distinguishable. He was a storyteller who captivated you."
Johnny Cash and Elvis are the only two musicians who are in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Hall of Fame.
