"Album Review of Without Wax"

By Steve Newton

I went to a couple of theatrical, multimedia prog-rock shows last year, the first being Seattle's Queensrÿche at the Commodore, the second Vancouver's Warjunk at the Firehall Arts Centre. From visual and aural standpoints, both bands delivered. In Warjunk's case, the avant-garde film and video clips compiled by lead-vocalist Graham Allan were a provocative backdrop for Deon Scott and Glen MacLeod's inventive rock-guitar stylings.
MacLeod wrote the bulk of the material on Without Wax, Warjunk's third full-length CD. From the first track, "All the Better", it's clear that the band is capable of delivering progressive hard-rock arrangements with intriguing lyrics, time changes, and hooks aplenty. The group's catchy brand of melodic metal also has a gentler side, as heard in the tender "Safe Haven", and the imaginative interplay between talented pickers Scott and MacLeod is particularly evident on raging but accessible tunes like "Lucky Day" and the feedback-laden "Struggle". While Warjunk sounds fine on CD, the band is best experienced in a concert setting, so check 'em out at the Pic Pub on Saturday

“Warjunk truly shines in a vast sea of musical mediocrity... Think Bowie, Radiohead, NIN and Nick Cave...A highly recommended purchase.” - Indie Al’s Online Reviews

"CD Review"

“Overflowing with musical ideas ...fresh and interesting... a pleasingly lush effort. Doesn’t sound quite like anything else.”

Bio

Warjunk cites their influences in lyrics and music to include NIN, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, and The Mars Volta.
“Safe Haven” has a hint of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, “(I Can’t) Wait” has the passion of NIN, and "Broken" is somehow reminiscent of U2.

Warjunk's first two CD's were mixed by the infamous GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine). 2005’s CD “Without Wax” compromises 12 original tracks written by the members individually and collaboratively.

Currently the band is playing live shows promoting their new single 'Love & Hate'. Check out the Calendar!
