Just like the little section of South Central Los Angeles that bears the same name as this California bred "Femcee", Watts 1965 is on fire. Ablaze with a new message for the poverty bound inner-city youth, she has a stlye all her own and a consciousness that we all should share. Mental freedom from the traps of the media and other negative forces in and around the black community is her main focus.
Watts 1965 began rhyming in 1993 at the Good Life Cafe where she really got all of her experience and stage presence from.
"That place was extremely tough. It's like a West Cosat Apollo Theater. If you weren't flowing, the crowd would begin chanting "Please pass the mic! Please pass the mic!" It didn't matter if you were female. If you were wack they would let you know. It was fun."
You might wonder to yourself why would an attractive young lady with such a sweet and peaceful demeanor, name herself something that conjurs up so many thoughts of pain, injustice and social defiance. She explains it this way.
"I wanted to name myself something in recent history that greatly impacted the Black community. It was important that it was recent enough for the youth to still idendentify with. So the children would know that April 29th wasn't the first time our community rioted against injustice."
Watts 1965 is bright and alive on stage. She is focused on giving an energetic performance everytime. She mainly performs at underground clubs and college functions.
"I love being on stage. I feel free and open when I'm up there. My message in my music is extremely important to me. Anytime I am able to get up and share my ideas with an audience, the feeling is beautiful. Whether or not they agree with everything I say is another story."
The groups that have had the greatest influence on her has been The Pharcyde and Freestyle Fellowship. She also digs the sounds of Mos Def, Nas, Outkast, Dead Prez.
"Basically I'm digging all original type cats, building on their art and politics."
Watts 1965 is exactly what hip hop is missing. A strong out spoken voice with enough charisma to challenge any wanna-be pimp gangsta hustla out there. You need to hear her message. Hip hop needs to hear her message.
