Watzlawick

Als Namenspatron haben sich diese jungen Italiener den berühmten Kommunikationswissenschaftler, Psychologen und Autor Paul Watzlawick ausgesucht, welcher ausserhalb Fachkreisen hauptsächlich durch sein Buch “Anleitung zum Unglücklichsein“ Berühmtheit erlangte. Da man, laut Paul W. nicht nicht-kommunizieren kann, wollen uns WATZLAWICK damit vermutlich kund tun, eher die intellektuelleren Hörer anzusprechen. Wobei es aber nicht unbedingt auf gewisse IQ-Zahlen oder angehäuftes Wissen ankommt, wenn man WATZLAWICKs Musik genießen will.

Als grobe Stilrichtung kann man, wenn man denn unbedingt möchte, “Post-Rock“ angeben, wobei damit nicht endlos treibende, sich langsam entwickelnde Riffs gemeint sind, sondern eher der schrammelige, fette Gitarrensound, die gelegentlichen Disharmonien, die Hardcore-Einsprengsel und die von zart bis hart variierenden Gesänge. TOOL und MASTODON spielen ebenso eine Rolle wie MESHUGGAH oder diverse Mike Patton-Projekte. Eine Schiene also, die nicht mehr ganz neu ist, die aber einen unglaublichen Gestaltungsspielraum lässt. Genregrenzen sind nur noch auf dem Papier vorhanden, Elektro-Einsprengsel stehen einträchtig neben Hardcore-Riffing, ein wenig Wüstenrock mit mehrstimmigen Vocals hier, Pathos, Frauengesänge und Synth-Streicher da – WATZLAWICK sind keine Kopie, sondern brennen hier ein ganz eigenes Feuerwerk ab, das es absolut in sich hat!

Lediglich an den sauberen Gesängen muss sich Frontmann Luca Cantini noch üben, hier beflecken noch ein paar ungewollt schräge Töne die ansonsten astreine Klangkulisse. Doch abgesehen davon fällt die EP nur im positiven Sinne auf. Der Sound ist zwar klar und differenziert, an den passenden Stellen aber wird dezent übersteuert, was der emotionalen Komponente der Musik nochmals einen eindringlicheren Anstrich gibt. Die Melodien und Riffs haben zu 100% Biss und bleiben hängen, auch wenn sie teilweise noch etwas zu stark an MASTODON erinnern, wie besonders im letzten Song, “Embrace“, offenkundig wird. Nicht falsch verstehen – der Song ist wohl DER Anspieltipp der Platte, denn recht viel dramatischer kann man einen Tonträger nicht beenden, aber im Anfangsteil wird man das Gefühl nicht los, hier etwas Nordamerikanisches zu hören.

Also: WATZLAWICK beweisen auf ihrer ersten Veröffentlichung, dass sie Großes leisten können, sollten sich aber noch ein wenig aus dem Schatten der Vorbilder lösen. Nicht nur Genrefans bekommen eine halbe Stunde hochklassige Musik, die einen Einstieg nicht allzu schwer macht und facettenreich und homogen zugleich wirkt. - Johannes Schmuck

Watzlawick sounds like a Polish/East European surname? Well, it is also partly the case… as Paul Watzlawick was an Austrian/American psychologist and philosopher until his death in 2007.
…and now you ask yourself what does it have to do with metal site like this? Well, Italian (Pisa) based four-piece post/rock act have ‘stolen’ his surname. To be honest I don’t see the connection between the two, but however Watzlawick, the band, has just released their self-released debut entitled Prologue. It is only printed in 150 copies limited edition digipack and it’s reserved only for the media people and friends, so far.
Prologue offers us six tracks of post rock and hypnotic, alternative & experimental metal that most of the time sounds like something a garage band would put out. Meanwhile the band still manages to keep listener awake and interested for the whole time, as they perfectly switch from choruses to verse while delivering some awesome chords and riffs from another planet. It is all supplemented by some smashing, almost a hard-core breaks and believe it or not, an occasional use of synths as well.
I also like the strong and secure vocal performance of their front man Luca. On the less positive note I would briefly mention the production, which is almost too loud and too hard… where even the vocals sometimes feel like fading away.
Still, Prologue is definitely more than a solid debut for a band that obviously posses a lot of talent and hard-work. Esp. recommended for the fans of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Mike Patton, Meshuggah and Amplifier.
This is a promising music from a promising band that any fan of rock and metal should give a chance…

Watzlawick’s sound is a bit experimental and their way is really heavy. “Prologue” EP contains 6 tracks every one tragically different from the others. The general profile and their music attitude are alternative and I can say that they reach metal paths. There is a progressive structure inside the compositions. They do remind me a Greek alternative metal band named ROT. I do like their sound and I think this kind of music is what we miss from the recent alternative and progressive metal and rock releases. They are influenced by ‘System of a Down’ and ‘Tool’ but on the other hand there are influences from ‘Mogwai’ and ‘God Is An Astronaut’ in their sound, somewhere in the background I can detect sounds of ‘the Mars Volta’ and ‘the Music’. A little problem is the amateur production of the sound, but this element offers to the sound a more pure and crude character. The music is quite cool but there is something missing on the music structure and the whole tracks sounds a bit choked up. The tones are fantastic and their ideas are really fresh. Their advantage is that they mix rock and metal in a crazy way, I can connect them (in sound matters) with ‘Russian Circles’ and this is honorable. The Italians self release their first ever EP and this release is on Creative Commons Attribution/Non-Commercial/Share-Alike, meaning Watzlawick are releasing their stuff out into the freedom for anyone to remix or mess around with as they see fit, so long as they credit the originators and don’t make a financial profit from it. The future is bright for this band from Pisa. This EP is on a limited edition, try to find it and prepare yourself for huge riffs, screams and shouts, beautiful passages and modern metal creations.

Paul Watzlawick was a renowned psychologist and philosopher until his death in 2007; the band that have stolen his surname for themselves are a post-metal four-piece (though they label themselves post-rock) from Pisa, Italy – yeah, the place with the tower. The connection between the two isn’t clear from a look at Wikipedia or their press release, but never mind that – what do this self-released outfit sound like? As Prologue kicks off, hypnotic looping figures soaked in echo and reverb give way to epic and beefy drop-D riffs with all the mid-range left in – no slim spare chuggity metal, this, but something more widescreen, the sort of stuff that (when listened to with your eyes shut) makes you think about standing on a cliff above a raging ocean with your arms spread wide as you scream into the wind from the sheer mind-crushing hugeness of the universe…
And you’re back in the room, hopefully left with the not-so-subliminal suggestion that I rather like the cut of Watzlawick’s jib. Indeed, they sound a fair bit like one of my favourite bands, namely the mighty Amplifier, the biggest-sounding three-piece you’ll ever see play live. They have the same ear for titanic chord changes, subtle shifts from chorus to verse and back again, judicious use of big modulation and delay effects… Luca Cantini even sounds like a more debonair (and less sci-fi obsessed) incarnation of Sel Balamir.
Watzlawick have some surprises in store, however; for example, they throw in a pit-smashing hardcore breakdown (complete with odd time signature) in the middle of “Fade To Blue”, reminding me more than a little bit of Helmet, but then they bring in some synth strings for the latter section, taking you back to that wind-swept cliff-top we mentioned earlier; add in some Keenan-esque drone singing, some low-bandwidth voice-overs a la Long Distance Calling, some shrieking metalcore couplets here and there and a few bright melodies from the lighter end of the post-whatever genres, and there’s plenty to keep your attention. Prologue is as ambitious a record as its title implies, and speaks to me loudly enough that I’ll be watching keenly for the band’s first appearances on these shores.
It’s not all good news, sadly; Prologue is entirely self-produced, and while the actual tones of the instruments are wonderful, it sounds like they’ve overcompressed the entire mix a little too hard. I love a bit of suck-and-squeeze between the guitars and drums on a loud album, but it’s too severe here, cutting into the definition of the riffs and bringing a fading-in-and-out sensation to the vocals, and lessening the impact of songs written by a band who clearly understand dynamics in the context of heavy music. I suspect it was deliberate; I also suspect the mastering process may have interfered with what Watzlawick wanted (try saying that ten times quickly).
But there’s another thing to note about the album as a whole, and that’s the little logo on the digipak sleeve that accompanied my copy: this is a Creative Commons Attribution/Non-Commercial/Share-Alike release, meaning Watzlawick are releasing their stuff out into the aether for anyone to remix or mess around with as they see fit, so long as they credit the originators and don’t make a financial profit from it. There’s a lot of lip-service to the openness of the internet from young bands, but concrete expressions of its embrace such as this one are far rarer. I hope the license encourages people to remix and play Prologue far and wide; it’s a flawed gem of a record from a very promising band.

Watzlawick Paul, psicologo e primo esponente della scuola di Palo Alto, scuola di psicoterapia, studioso di comunicazioni e delle problematiche umane. Da questo personaggio prendono il nome i Watzlawick appunto, band rock di Pisa nata poco più di un anno fa. Come suggerisce il personaggio a cui si ispirano, ci troviamo di fronte ad un sound non convenzionale fuori dalla maggior parte degli schemi che caratterizzano il genere stesso, spaziando tra post e math rock, andando scivolare talvolta nel grunge e nello stoner, tra avvolgenti melodie, riff distorti, tra urla e voci pulite, passando per i Tool fino ad arrivare ai Muse più visionari.

"Prologue" rappresenta l'esordio per i toscani, un ep di sei tracce e tenendo conto dell'ancor breve vita della band, si rimane stupiti dal livello compositivo dei brani, con strutture già mature, ognuno di questi infatti possiede una propria identità ben distinta e complessa, non assimilabili al primo ascolto, fortunatamente aggiungerei. "Prologue" è un intricato viaggio nella nostra mente, in un mare di bands alternative-clone, c'è qualcuno di veramente alternative. - (sic)VII

Alla luce ed a dispetto di ciò che accade in quelle che possono definirsi realtà mediatico/musicali del costume di casa nostra, ove vengono messe in eccellenza bieche realtà commerciali fatte di essenze che sono sublimazioni di luoghi e “laghi” (per citare la vittima di turno) comuni, giunge in soccorso dell’ascoltatore, l’atto dell’autoproduzione, vero e proprio generatore di esperienze antagoniste al regime sonoro vigente.

Figli dell’autoproduzione d’alta qualità sono i Watzlawick, band pisana autrice di un Post Rock pregno di rimandi ad aliene divagazioni che sanno di sincopi e di sperimentazioni Math Rock. La band trae il proprio monicker da Paul Watzlawick, psicologo e primo esponente della Scuola di Palo Alto. Ed è proprio il pensiero dello psicologo in questione ad essere uno dei nodi per capire a fondo l’essenza di “Prologue”, si perché per Watzlawick l’uomo non è una monade, un qualcosa di isolato tra gli altri, ed anche quando è da solo, questi non può eludere l’atto comunicativo. Nella comunicazione si apre una relazione con l’altro, in un gioco di rimandi dove la posta è la definizione del sé. Questo sé (come per Pirandello) è un qualcosa di multiforme che varia a seconda delle relazioni che intercorrono con gli altri ed anche con se stessi.

Questo gioco multiforme volto alla definizione del sé è il cardine del sound della band pisana, un sound che è figlio di nature ibride nel suo continuo rimandare a sensazioni intime, melodie aeree, a strutture fatte di dissonanze e di illuminate ed illuminanti divagazioni ove prendono forma i concetti estranei ed estranianti di un artista come Mike Patton insieme ai rimandi modernisti dei Dillinger Escape Plan, in un corpus sonoro che crea un continuum di sensazioni di vertigine. Un corpus sonoro che ha un modo di rappresentarsi alieno anche a sé stesso. Sei tracce che sono sei abbozzi di personalità, che hanno forza proprio perché non si autodefiniscono ed eludono sapientemente ogni rimando a bieche classificazioni.

Un lavoro di caratura elevata che è un piccolo trattato di sperimentazione sonora. E come conclude lo psicologo austriaco: la relazione comunicativa è una essenza circolare in cui causa ed effetto restano indefinibili. Aprirsi a nuovi orizzonti non è mai stato così piacevole. - Andrea Angelino

Nati poco più di un anno fa a Pisa, gli Watzlawick, dal nome di un illustre psicologo e primo esponente della Scuola di Palo Alto, escono agli inizi di questo duemiladieci con il primo lavoro interamente auto prodotto, questo "Prologue", che già sembra aver mietuto e mietere numerosi e convincenti apprezzamenti.
E' "Egoism" ad aprire il lavoro; partiture equamente divise tra momenti distorti, nervosi e convulsi ed atmosfere più vuote, introspettive e calme; stacchi improvvisi e chitarre cadenzate insieme al basso, in primissimo piano, richiamano e non poco i Korn, con le loro melodie malsane, cupe e sempre pronte ad esplodere. Di buonissimo livello i chorus, avvolgenti, melodici e di facile impatto e presa; molto buone anche le vocals, sempre in bilico tra l'angosciante, il melenso ed il rabbioso. Inizio più che convincente, capace di chiarire fin da subito le coordinate su cui andremo a parare; grosse basi nu metal al cospetto di profonde reminiscenze rock.
Su "Red Giant" le sonorità si fanno leggermente più scarne; è ancora il basso a fare da base portante, mentre le chitarre hanno un suono decisamente più fluido ed eightees. Pian, piano il brano cresce in intensità sino ad arrivare ai chorus, dove esplodono le distorsioni e le vocals si fanno più rabbiose e crude. Un fievole velo di malinconia pervade ed avvolge il tutto, cosa questa che si rivelerà il vero e proprio trade union tra i vari pezzi del promo. Le sonorità espresse, stavolta, si avvicinano di molto a gruppi quali, 30 Seconds To Mars, Vex Red e simili.
Ancora suoni nudi e scarni contraddistinguono "Fade to Blue"; il basso martellante detta il tempo, mentre le chitarre graffiano costantemente. Il brano si dipana tra momenti saturi e compressi e partiture, invece, più riflessive e d'attesa. Attimi di puro rock vanno a fondersi a profonde reminiscenze nu, legate stavolta a doppio filo con i grandi Deftones e le loro melodie distorte iper compresse e pregne di oscura e pesante malinconia, sentimento questo accentuato ancor più dall'uso dimesso e sincero delle tastiere. Bravi.
La pioggia, con le sue nuvole ed il suo incessante cadere, ci introduce in "The Path"; le ritmiche si fanno più cadenzate, i suoni pieni e corposi. Buonissima l'idea delle doppie vocals, una femminile a doppiare il tutto. Un lento e lungo crescendo emotivo ed emozionale ci accompagna sino all'esplosione sui chorus, assolutamente distorti e compressi. Stranissima la sensazione che si riesce a provare, grazie all'uso delle vocals ed alla timbrica espressa sembra quasi di sentir cantare da Jonathan Davies, un brano dei Placebo, da essi suonato con l'irruenza e la potenza degli stessi Korn. Bestiale. "Before It's Morning" risulterà il brano più tirato e complesso del lotto; melodie malate, articolate e distorte atte ad introdurre i lunghi bridge ed i ritornelli; di nuovo lenti crescendo musicali ed emotivi. Le ritmiche si fanno poi maggiormente spezzate, le chitarre più graffianti, mentre leggeri effetti in sottofondo rendono il pezzo assolutamente completo e competitivo. La melodia portante è di valore assoluto, dal sapore leggermente blues e pregno di una malinconia tangibile ed ammaliante. Ci troviamo di fronte ad un pezzo dalle enormi ed incredibili potenzialità, sia radiofoniche che commerciali.
E' quindi "Embrace", ascoltabile su diversi portali e podcast statunitensi, a chiudere questo primo lavoro dei nostri; una sorta di post-rock nudo e crudo, fortemente influenzato da soluzioni alternative e nu metal. Le sonorità compresse, corpose e distorte risultano incredibilmente avvolgenti, grazie all'ottimo lavoro delle chitarre, alle ritmiche in appoggio del basso ed a quel certo non so che di maestoso e scintillante che riesce a esplodere da ogni solco. Una nuova realtà in ambito rock/metal sembra finalmente farsi posto e spazio nell'underground nostrano; come ho già avuto modo di dire le potenzialità non mancano, ogni singolo brano sembra fatto per entrarti dentro e non uscirne molto facilmente; il tutto alla fine risulta nettamente orecchiabile, senza però, mai sfiorare il troppo pacchiano, il banale od il già sentito. Questo connubio, nemmeno troppo forzato, tra sonorità rock/alternative di stampo maggiormente english e sonorità tipicamente legate al più solido e storico nu metal, riesce a creare soluzioni sonore di valore assoluto, donando al tutto una melodia ed uno spirito di fondo incredibilmente vincenti ed imprescindibili. Non c'è che dire, diamogli un' occasione. - Pasa

Un bel lavoro quello dei pisani Watzlawick. L’idea della loro musica è semplice, come quella costruttivista dello psicologo austriaco da cui prendono il nome: “l’intenzionalità è indifferente poiché in ogni caso sarà il ricevente ad interpretare il messaggio”. Loro si pongono, quindi, senza precise “indicazioni per l’ascolto”, tanto sarete voi a decidere come interpretare il “loro” messaggio, Prologue.

L’Ep dei Watzlawick al contrario degli usuali lavori autoprodotti può vantare un’ottima manifattura, ma cosa più importante un’ottima qualità. Una band nata da poco (nel 2009), che mette insieme musicisti provenienti da diverse esperienze, e in cui la mescolanza di generi che partorisce Prologue non può altro che ricondurre ad un unico comun denominatore: il post. Post-rock, post-metal, addirittura post-hardcore a tratti. Vi sembra esagerato? Parliamone…

Parte senza mezzi termini “Egoism”: riff agrodolce per preparare l’orecchio e morbidezza quasi goth di Luca Cantini a disorientare. Ci porta il primo carattere dei Watzlawick, la variabilità: le corde tirano, si arrabbiano e cambiano il mood del pezzo ogni 30 secondi, modellando la traccia tra metal e hardcore. E non c’è da stupirsi se si ha l’effetto che l’efferatezza diventi disperazione. Come in “Red Giant”, che comincia leggera, post-rock, e finisce per ricordare il progressive metal dei Tool. Buon lavoro del basso e degli special effects di Filippo Cosci, un po’ meno del vocalist che, evitando certi virtuosismi emocore, avrebbe reso di più nel lato molto più convincente che viene fuori dalle sue performance più ruvide e amare.
Forte, acida e aggressiva. “Fade To Blue” è la più bella. Rasenta la perfezione, in un calibratissimo equilibrio tra tempi sincopati, corde decise, effetti delicati, parole urlate con rabbia ma anche con angoscia. Mathrock e prog a braccetto con l’hardcore. Non proprio una cosa da niente. Ottimo biglietto da visita, di quelli che un ingenuo “gagliardi!” non glielo toglie nessuno. Niente da invidiare ai The Dillinger Escape Plan (di Miss Machine) da cui riescono a prendere il meglio e a tramutarlo a modo loro con toni più razionali e meno “rumorosi” (“The Path”). Ma Prologue è soprattutto sperimentazione più meramente punk rock: le ultime due tracce - “Before It’s Morning” e “Embrace” – , oltre ad avere dei testi dolci, deliranti e ossessionati, sono la dimostrazione più limpida che il neurone musicale italiano, quando ci si mette, sa adoperarsi ed essere anche originale.

Secondo il vecchio caro Watzlawick psicologo quando nell’interazione comunicativa-sistema c’è ridondanza si può delineare una struttura, e quindi un modello dinamico. E se “un sistema ha un senso solo all’interno di una dimensione temporale dentro la quale possa svilupparsi”, riuscirà il non-modello dei Watzlawick a trovare terreno fertile nel nostro sistema di ridondanti banalità? Ai riceventi l’ardua sentenza. - Emiliana Pistillo
