"BBJ demo"

Registrazione interamente analogica in vecchio stile? - www.genovatune.net

"BBJ demo-UK"

By Dave Urwin

Although I do my best not to be judgemental in life occasionally I just see a band name and am fairly convinced that what I’m about to hear will not be to my liking. BBJ stands for Bad Blow Job and I was expecting two minute punk songs with a lyrical content that I would have struggled to find amusing even as a teenager but within seconds I was to be proved wrong. I guess I asked for it really. What we have instead is atmospheric rock of the general ilk that Life of Agony were beginning to make before the departure of enigmatic vocalist Keith Caputo. That’s the first track anyway, but in time we also get electronic beats, African rhythms and disjointed vocal effects, although these add seasoning to the existing recipe rather than becoming the basis of a shift to another dimension. Ironically, the music BBJ make is pretty radio-friendly. In fact after a couple of listens I realise that the vocals did remind me of another band but sadly this band was Nickelback. If it wasn’t for that fact then I’d probably really like them too. Seeing as they hail from Italy a Chad Kroeger howl simply sounds artificial and is like one of those moments when it starts pissing down with rain during a lovely picnic.

‘Deep Glance’ clocks in at nearly seven minutes and throughout the guitars duel in an understated, melodic manner with the occasional piano inflection before finally towards the end the expected blast of distortion pops its head over the wall. ‘She Used to Tell Me’ is split into a two minute intro track and a five and a half minute main track. The intro is almost jazzy in places – I’m thinking Robbie Krieger of The Doors rather than Miles Davis, then the main track could almost be Simple Minds if the spirit of Nickelback crept into their brains at a crucial moment during proceedings. ‘Drifting Away and Die’ seems to have at least three different guitar tracks and none of them are unnecessary, which is something that BBJ have very much in their favour.

If I am to cast further aspersions on the vocal delivery I will undoubtedly be forced to scoff a hefty slice of humble pie when I discover that the singer does actually hail from the other side of the pond, although if he is an unashamed Italian then in my opinion he should bear this in mind when singing. The music on offer here is of a high quality, that much is in no doubt, but…..well, what if Liam Gallagher sung for Radiohead? - www.live-music-scene.co.uk

Bio

An all Italian band with strong European influences, specifically British, made up of four members from the Genoa area. The band was formed in 2006, initially under the name of 'BBJ', by John and the now ex-drummer Aledsandro Kusmic eventually introducing Paul who became an important component of the group. At the end of 2007 the trio produced their promo CD that was reviewed in Italy by magazines such as Rockerilla, Genovatune.net, Rumore, Il Mucchio, while in the UK by Live music scene, Tasty, Red hot velvet, Room thirteen, Get ready to rock, Street voice DIYwith their song “Drifting away and die” landing on the playlist of radio online Starship Overflow.
After a long and extensive search, the trio finally found their forth and fifth members in 2008 (Steve Guitarist, Mark at the bass). From this point the group participated in diverse music festivals and competitions like Saint-Vincent Festival, Martelive, Rock contest, Tour music, Italiawave festival, and also reviewed from the American online magazine Junior’s Cave.
At this time the success of the band was growing locally, giving more opportunity to performing outside Liguria. After a short break in 2009, the group decided to change its name from 'BBJ' to 'Way Pristine' after the Uk promotion. This decision was specifically due to the negative response in the UK from the media with regards to the original name and CD title and its ambiguous meaning. After a period of pre-recording and local performances in Liguria (like Soundvillage in Genoa) the band finally recorded their CD “Inverted Converted” in September of 2010 which was produced by Giovanni Cirigliano, with the participation of Stefano Cabrera regarding strings arrangements and Andrea Celeste with the backing vocals on the track “The kid on the car”. One thousand copies of the new album (300 for the single) were released containing 11 tracks, which includes the single “Inverted Converted”. In their new album the band has finally found a distinctive sound that places them within the mainstream alternative rock industry. Their musical influences are now a solid part of their easily recognisable sound. The album will be officially released in mid February 2010 and will also be available to download on Itunes and other web pages. On the completion of recording the album, Alessandro (drummer) decided to take a break from the music industry, leaving the members to find a replacement. At the end of December 2009, after numerous auditions, Chris was chosen as the new drummer. He will be participating in all promotional gigs in Italy and Europe.
As of now the group is promoting their CD in Italy and the UK with the S-a-N agency. The promotion of “Inverted converted”, which will take place in March, will be followed by journalists, musicians, producers and television stations, in fact the band has also been selected by Rock1 Production for “Indie music showcase” which will be broadcast on US and Canadian television in season 2.
