L.A. band Warner Drive parties in Sacramento - show review
January 13, 3:17 PMSacramento Rock Music Examiner Laura Winn

Warner Drive in concert.

Looks can be deceiving. Warner Drive looks like a punk band: lead singer Jonny Law dons a Bad Religion t-shirt, bassist Elvis wears Agnostic Front, guitarists Candice and Albert are disheveled and greasy and drummer Jonny U sports a T shirt from Etnies skateboards, one of the band's sponsors. ??The five 20something punks take the stage and bust into a straight-ahead cover of "Born to Be Wild." A really good cover. Then the band dedicates "Sharp Dressed Man" to Grady, an older gentleman who wore a tux to the first show Warner Drive played at Shaker's Pub.??Warner Drive sounds more like Bon Jovi and Guns n' Roses than The Buzzcocks and Guttermouth or even Green Day. Warner Drive are a self-proclaimed "party band," but they don't really care how you label them. They just want to have fun, bassist Elvis says at Friday's show.??This is the Los Angeles-based band's third show at Shaker's, in as many months. The band is making frequent stops at the Citrus Heights neighborhood bar in an attempt to build a Sacramento fan base. The girl in the Warner Drive T shirt singing along to the band's originals proves they've got at least one hardcore local fan.??Warner Drive mixes originals in between chunks of bar friendly covers. They get the locals on their side with 80s sing-alongs and then throw in an originals like "The Tin Man" and "Radio Love Song," which each show a hint of skate punk, but lean heavily on the party rock sound.??They never take themselves too seriously and even sing the ABCs to the tune of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive." It's hilarious and inspires one fan to crump. Yes, crump.??Warner Drive's covers are spot on and a lot of fun, but I prefer the originals, especially on the third hour. They power through three high-energy sets (with two breaks) from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. That's longer than any band should play, but the crowd is still shouting for more songs as the bartender announces last call and the band plays their last note.?
