"Summer lasts all summer for punk band"

“What goes through your mind when you think of July? Summer. Parties. Road trips. Skateboarding. Love. No school. Freedom. Now think about four dudes turning all that into some gnarly pop punk.”
This is the introduction to July— a Brampton pop punk band— who has just released their second EP and embarked on a U.S. tour.
Based on that, it’s safe to surmise the four friends and musicians are living up to their name.
The group of young 20-somethings— three who were raised and still live in Brampton, and one Burlington friend who joined the group in December— have taken the influences from party punk bands such as Blink 182, Fallout Boy, and Panic at the Disco to help shape their own unique musical repertoire.
The result, said vocalist Devin Moody, is a sound that is familiar and brand new at once.
“Pulling influences out of everything from All Time Low all the way to The Notorious B.I.G. and ’80s pop, each member brings their own experience to the band,” he said of Andrew Falcao (guitar/vocals), Sam Guaiana (drums) and Marc Sautter (bass/vocals). “A lot of pop punk bands sound exactly the same, but we think we bring a little bit of all genres to our music but still have enough of a hard-hitting edge.”
For two and a half weeks July will play gigs in Chicago, Washington, California and Las Vegas to promote their new eight-track album, titled MMXII. This album of original material comes after the terrific success of their first EP, a five-track album titled The Best Nights which was hailed as “nothing short of incredible” by Travis Magazine.
The group recently performed at an unofficial CD release party at Brampton’s Cafe Ole, and packed the house during the celebration. A second, official, CD release party will take place at All Stars Bar and Grill in Brampton on Aug. 26.
“We are all taking this as seriously as we can,” said Moody about the band’s ambitions. “But our songs are mostly about girls and having fun.”
July has gathered a steady following in Southern Ontario, he said, and he hopes to spread the word about the group’s music.
“We are really proud of what we have done and want to share our music,” he said.

"July a good month for July"

It’s a great month for July, recently performing at the Warped Tour in Toronto and leaving today (Friday) for a three-week tour in the U.S. that goes from Chicago to Las Vegas.

The pop/punk band also released its second album, MMXII, this week.

“I can see big things for us, hopefully,” Burlington musician Devin Moody, vocalist, said. “We’re really proud of the EP we created and we’re hoping things get bigger with everything that’s been going on.”

The new album has a distinct difference from the first album, The Best Nights (2010), as Moody only recently left his solo music career to join the band.

Although the band July, consisting of guitarist Andrew Falcao, bass guitarist Marc Sautter and drummer Sam Guaiana, has been together for two years, Moody joined several months ago in November.

“I was a fan of the band before I was in it,” said Moody. “When Sam asked me to sing, I was totally into the idea.”

This is the first album with Moody’s vocals and he said the record has progressed musically as well.

“It’s more mature,” he explained. “The last one was about experiences you would have in high school and this one is about our experiences and struggles as musicians. I wrote the lyrics and the melodies but there were songs where everyone pitched in. I think that’s why it also sounds different from the first (album) as it has my input.

“They’re still fun songs,” Moody added as the band describes them as a “straight-up pop punk party with songs about heartbreak and making it to the big time.”

The new album took the band five months to record, and although group member Guaiana produced the EP, the group sent it to Montreal to be mixed and mastered by Luc Tellier.

“The band has a really good dynamic so we were comfortable writing together,” noted Moody. “We have a lot of new songs written so the next CD will come pretty easily.”

With the release of the new album, July leaves today for its first U.S. tour.

“We’re really excited for this tour,” said Moody. “We’ve never played shows in the U.S. so we’re excited we got this opportunity.”

The opportunity arose from the band’s new manager, Patrick Walford, who hosts a radio show, Rock the Walls.

“He has connections in the states so when we started working with him, he put our name in when a U.S. band, Second to Last, needed another band to tour with,” explained Moody. “Patrick was a fan of July, he would come out to our shows and he contacted us as he wanted to help local bands.”

Moody added he hopes the support will continue as the band strives to get the industry’s attention next.

“After the CD and the tour, we’ll start pushing to a lot of labels and agency groups,” he said. “We’ll try to get more people involved with the band.”

Bio

Debut release “The Best Nights - EP” showcased a collection of catchy pop punk, reminiscent of Fallout Boy and All Time Low, while retaining an element of singularity. Songs like “Dance, Shuffle, Move Your Feet” and “I Live My Life For The Weekend” became instant fan favorites inciting manic sing along sessions at every live show. On their sophomore effort, simply titled “MMXII” July further explores the element that sets them apart. Armed with a new weapon in the arsenal: Moody’s dynamic and emotive voice, the band is able to further delve into their own style. “Second Best” is a pop punk anthem that puts a new spin on the sound July fans have come to know and love. While “Collapse” is a ballad-y gem that takes the band’s sound to a whole new level, winning the attention of a broader audience.

July has spent the better part of a year promoting “MMXII” with a multitude of shows, including a US tour under their belts. This assiduous work ethic has earned the band notable accolades such as: being featured at Koi Fest, Canadian Music Week, and a coveted spot on AbsolutePunk’s top 100 of 2012. July plans to intensify their already hectic tour schedule in 2013 with plans to broaden their growing fan base.
