"Interview: Lowrider"

It’s been a couple of years between drinks for Lowrider but they’re back with their first new material since 2010. After close to a decade of stealing the hearts of domestic and international audiences with their funky hip-hop, soul hybrid, the band decided it was about time they came full circle. Black Stones, their fourth studio album, is the result. Digging deep into their origins, the quartet have produced a record that pays homage to their roots without compromising progression. With an extensive national tour about to kick off, I got Paul Bartlett (drums) on the phone for a chat about the album. He assured me it’s their best yet and I’m inclined to believe him." - Moustache Magazine

Bio

Forming in the early 2000’s after meeting through Adelaide’s tight knit music community, Lowrider (brothers Paul and John Bartlett, Scott Duncan and Joe Braithwaite) instantly created a distinct sound, drawing influence from the likes of icons Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield through to modern contemporaries John Legend, Portishead and Erykah Badu. Word began to spread and before long, Lowrider were selling out intimate shows across the country and moving thousands of units of their highly acclaimed debut record from word of mouth alone.

In 2008, they followed up their self titled E.P. with one of the most lauded Australian releases of the era, Diamond Amongst the Thieves, introducing them to a brand new fanbase and providing an exciting transition from intimate venues to sold out headline shows and coveted support slots on national tours for Alicia Keys, Lupe Fiasco and John Legend.

Their 2010 LP, Round the World, was a sublime step in their signature sound, seeing the band embrace some of their more classic influences. Mixed by Grammy winner Jason Goldstein (The Roots, Mary J Blige, Beyonce), the album garnered an overwhelmingly positive response, including their first ARIA Nomination, and saw them land on the national Big Day Out, Bluesfest and Pyramid Rock festivals.

Now going into 2013, after several lauded national tours, an appearance at Austin’s SXSW festival and a whole bunch of life experiences, Lowrider present Black Stones, a stripped back and no nonsense approach from the band, showing distinct sonic progression from their previous material.. Recorded over the past year between Red Bull's Studios in Los Angeles and Chapel Lane Studios in Adelaide, "Black Stones" is set for release on Friday 15th February 2013 through Illusive.
