"Panama - Magic"

Excellent new indie pop tune “Magic” from Sydney outfit Panama. Think: the tropical percussion of Friendly Fires complimented with the melodic sophistication of The Holidays and the warm summer synth work of Bag Raiders. Have I dropped enough names in there for you to gather that this is clearly a tight single?

Panama. I want to go to there. - Party By Jake

The whole track, uplifting, and reminding of an impending spring renewal, is a potent antidote for anyone’s case of the winter blues..." - URB

"Panama - Magic"

An indie pop track with all the synths, whistling and general happiness that is required, Magic is reminiscent of early Cut Copy, but with more 80s influences. - All I Do Is Listen

"Pretty hard to fault indie pop that's as well executed as this." - Triple J Unearthed

A classically trained pianist from the age of six, Jarrah McCleary grew up in the sticky heat of the Northern Territory. His previous project, The Dirty Secrets saw the band working between Australia and London with iconic producer and engineer, Nick Terry (Klaxons, Libertines).

After working on ideas for a new record for over two years, in early 2011, McCleary declared a new album and boarded the airplane, bound for Los Angeles. Between splashes of yacht rock, trop-pop and nods to Peter Gabriel (thanks to the iconic ‘80s Yamaha DX7 synth), a short summer experience in the ‘city where dreams are made’ lead to tracks tinged with hints of hopeful house music strewn with the sleaziness of Venice beach and too much free poured tequila. And so, Panama was born.

Heavily steeped in sunburn, the scent of coconut, beer drinking on the promenade and bikini-clad girls on roller-skates, Panama’s debut single, Magic was produced and mixed in Los Angeles by Eric Broucek of DFA fame (Holy Ghost, Eleanor Friedberger, !!!). During their recordings, Eric’ friend Jim Orso (VHS or BETA) joined them in the studio on drumming duties, adding a layer to the sound that is as relevant as it is brimful of ‘80s influence.

Their debut single, Magic was released in March 2012 and will be re-released on vinyl with remixes through iconic dance label, Future Classic. Panama's highly anticipated debut EP will be released in September, with a videoclip for the second single currently being made in Berlin.

Having already shares stages with the likes of Dappled Cities, Guerre, Alison Wonderland and Elizabeth Rose, Panama are about to set off supporting Van She on their Melbourne and Sydney run of shows. Panama will be doing their own tour soon - watch this space.
