Weather Barn

Park Hands is the brilliant debut single from Cast of the Capital, Marionettes and Carson Wells love child, Weather Barn. This slice of perfect pop pie is full of catchy melodies. It’s hook laden and showcases that undoubtedly Scottish jangly guitar that the likes of Teenage Fanclub have made so famous over the years. Matt Morris’ vocals are ably supported by pitch perfect harmonies, which along with the jangly guitars and impressive rhythm section helps Summer flow out of this track; something that is desperately needed considering the weather we have had over the last week.
Park Hands is backed by two b-sides in the shape of Cinnamon Hill and Each Side of Satan. The first, Cinnamon Hill, is a rockier affair and spills energy; something that has become a mainstay in the latter of COTC’s gigs and Weather Barns opening shows. It’s rock, but it still has that clean cut, perfect pop sound that many have come to love about this band. Each Side of Satan is a quieter, laid back number; so laid back in fact it almost falls over onto your lap whilst you listen to it. A stripped back song, it showcases the depth in lead singer’s Matt Morris’s song-writing ability and highlights that his band can do loud and quiet, but both with that unmistakable and more importantly unique perfect pop sound that they appear to have crafted.
Overall, this is a great wee debut EP from Weather Barn and has wetted my appetite even further to catch this new line up live. The band play live in One Up Records in Aberdeen on the 18th September to launch the single and will also be available from iTunes on the same date. I suggest everyone goes out to buy it because it truly is a great big perfect slice of Scottish indie pop. - Flares N Seagulls

From Aberdeen comes Weather Barn with their pitch-perfect, harmony laden debut single "Park Hands". As we descend into the dreariness of autumn this is the bright, lilting antithesis to the increasingly dull days. With a country rock twist that has tinges of 90s Britpop acts like Cast you will be instantly enveloped in the easy going, sparkling melodies on offer.

With this single comes an extra two tracks, 'Cinnamon Hill' and 'Each Side of Satan' which show this is a good-time group with depth in talent and a variety of material. From the Marc Bolan tinged vocals of 'Cinnamon Hill' to the slower, acoustic edged, Death Cab styling of 'Each Side of Satan' you can't help but fall ever so slightly in love with this band after sampling the delights on offer.

If you want music that is a pure pleasure to listen to, then indulge in Weather Barn. It's addicting stuff that will definitely leave you wanting more. - Room Thirteen

Weather Barn are a newly-formed Scottish four-piece indie band consisting of two ex-Cast of the Capital members, Steve and Matthew Morris with new guitarist Daryl Rankin and drummer Iain Dallas. The band have wasted no time in organising gigs throughout Scotland as well as the release of their first single, Park Hands, on the 18th September. This band reshuffling has, in the bands own words has allowed them to be ‘well on the way to fulfilling our potential’, this shows a more serious and ambitious side to the group which had already proven to be tenacious and hard-working. All of these attributes can only lead to success and after hearing the first single, they have the musical talent to back up their personal strengths.

The title song, Park Hands, juxtaposes aspects of rock and country to create a song that will one second cause you to tap your foot gently to the soft, comforting sounds then out of nowhere comes a heavier guitar melody and vocals which forces you to use your knees as a drum-kit and chant ‘there are monsters in this world, don’t be letting them scare you’. Park Hands is the most addictive and catchy song I have heard this year, with all aspects of the song coming together to create something that will appeal to all musical palettes.

The other two songs on this CD are equally as impressive, but nevertheless entirely different. Cinnamon Hill is substantially more rock orientated, with a chorus that will repeat in your head long after the song concludes. The last song, Each Side of Satan, emphasises the bands interest in American bands such as Band of Horses and Death Cab for Cutie with very relaxed and colloquial style which contrasts perfectly with the other two songs.

Overall, Park Hands is a début that deserves the recognition this band yearn to achieve, and with enough support and promotion Weather Barn have the ability, the drive and the passion that is required to permeate the UK market.
