"Introducing - We Buy Gold"

Introducing: We Buy Gold
Claiming to be a ‘High energy fusion of post punk, cockney, rock, rap with a flavour of drum of bass’, We Buy Gold seem to cover a large spectrum of the music genre. It is not until you actually hear any of their material, that you cannot seem to categorise them into fitting into one specific genre yet they do relate to all that they claim. Their unique sound and humorous lyrics, determine that they may be compared to the likes of GLC, yet the awkward and mismatched sound of We Buy Gold establishes them as having an incredibly original sound.
Ron’s Room seems to let the listener know what the band is about with the first vocals of the song. Craig’s vocals and ability to switch pitch and sound so easily means that the track is irritatingly contagious and you cannot help but tap your foot to the bass line. The repetitive ‘Open the room Ron, What’s in the room Ron’ forms the basic lyrical chorus set up. It may not have had as many plays as their other tracks on Myspace but Ron’s Room compiles a pick ‘n mix of sound, tone, pitch and tempo and manages to create a track that shouldn’t work….but does!
Spanish Beats Remastered has a very different tone to Ron’s Room. The musical talent and ability throughout the four members of the band is evident in this track. The diversity and skills used, makes and gives this track a traditional Spanish essence mixed with punk vocals. It has a stereotypical Spanish sound in parts yet We Buy Gold bring in a sense of comedy, accenting ‘Señorita’!
A different sound can be found in Jack Little Demo. This messy track makes it difficult to hear Craig’s muddled lyrics but this emphasises how as a band they capture and mix punk with drum and bass, rock and rap. Although you cannot decipher each word, the song seems to project a state of disillusion. Drug fuelled lyrics such as: ‘so many high people’ allows Craig to create a sense of instability through his irregular sound. The last thirty seconds of the song, indicates a transition and gives the song a finale.
High energy fusion of post punk, cockney, rock, rap with a flavour of DnB
Thuggery seems to propose itself as the track to allow listeners to know what We Buy Gold are all about. Vocally being likened to Johnny Rotten, Craig determines the bands punk credibility with this track. Lyrics such as: ‘Oh fuck, the dirty bastards’ and the eponymous and rather genius Thuggery heard throughout the track gives it a cockney rude boy modern attachment that many people can relate to.
Lady of the Manor is a mysterious track unveiling the thoughts of secret admirer. The track has a fairly fast tempo and opens with: ‘a lady of distinction, just to watch her move, is my addiction’. This track is quite irregular with the vocals becoming erratic at about 1.50– this expressing the mindset of the admirer maybe? Although this may be the case the sheer expression used in this track means that it is comical!
Lost and Found is a self-explanatory track expressing the tale of being lost and becoming found in London. Expressing conclusions and illusions throughout the song and using the repetitive ‘lost and found’ with clashing symbols and guitar riffs can seem to express the stress of being lost. The song concludes with ‘lost and found’ being sung and echoing as if being lost through a tunnel. It is an effective technique and works on this track as it is so different to the tone set throughout.
We Buy Gold do have a gritty sound and are able to mash together genres and sounds that typically should not work. Their individuality needs to be credited and if you are in London town on 11th June, head down to Arch 635 in Clapham to see if the band who claim to buy gold are actually worth the weight. - New Beats Media

"Spanish beats E.P review"

'Spanish Beats' is the debut single from London based post-punk reprobates We Buy Gold. Claiming they make the MC5 sound like Keane, and with influences as diverse as Bad Brains, Roni Size, Aphex Twin and Minor Threat, an interesting mix of drum 'n' bass influenced hardcore is promised.

Leading off with a Dead Kennedys like riff and a nice indie drum beat, it's like something off a 70s kids TV show; singer Craig has a wild style, the vocals are mad, lots of rolling of the tongue, hand claps...I like hand claps! Even a little Spanish acoustic guitar in the middle, and some ranting in Spanish also. Lots of energy, it's catchy and instant, a raw mash of Toy Dolls and the Dead Kennedys. Check out the fantastic animated promo vid on YouTube too, well worth a watch.

Also on this promo CD is B-side 'Lady Of The Manor', its thundering bass line and frantic drumming hitting like a tonne of bricks, and also bonus track 'Master Plaster'. All tracks nod their head more to the punk and hardcore influences more than the drum 'n' bass, and with all three tracks clocking in at a combined seven minutes it's over as soon as it has begun.

'Spanish Beats' is taken from the forthcoming debut album 'Ron's Room' and on this evidence it will be well worth checking out.

""Do these feisty Londoners posses the Midas touch?""

Whilst it seems that everyone these days is advertising on television to buy your gold from you for a petty fraction of its true value, not everyone is crafting music as original as We Buy Gold are. The London quartet has imaginatively fused together post-punk, rock and rap in an attempt to establish a style that is appealing and exhilarating to listen to.

Despite limiting themselves to two chords for the title track 'Spanish Beats', the indie qualities aid We Buy Gold in their pursuit of uniqueness, with vocalist Craig's entrancing performance particularly warranting recognition. The flamenco-like guitar and driving claps that feature in the latter half of the song add a marvellous flavouring, topped off with a pulse-raising increase in tempo. 'Lady of the Manor' marks an unyielding boost in activity, the influence of genres such as drum & bass and garage on the band's frontman both likely to been sources of inspiration for this composition. There is nothing overly complicated attempted, but speed and simplicity are bound together to produce a hectic hybrid. Rounding off the EP is the well-compacted 'Master Plater;' a track that commendably accomplishes all that it set out to do in little under a minute and a half. This invigorating finale not only oozes British identity, but acts as a perfect exhibition of the ease with which this group blends musical styles.

The 'Spanish Beats' EP is a compelling release from We Buy Gold, with the British band using the originality of their music to their advantage. Diversity is truly a blessing and this foursome certainly seems to have something interesting on their hands.
