Weigh Anchors

Weigh Anchors

 Calgary, Alberta, CAN
BandRockFolk

This band is a house on fire. Guitars, drums, accordions, melodicas, harmonicas, and ukuleles, warping and cracking in the heat, with one voice directing the blaze. Only kids howling like wolves can be heard over the din.

Biography

Weigh Anchors is the musical vessel of Dillon Whitfield. Weigh Anchors could show up at your house with a guitar, and a tape recorder playing AM radio shows, or they could show up at your bar as a four piece rock band, playing like their hands are on fire. Either way; the songs will beam with honesty and energy, and do their best to break your heart.

September 2010 saw the release of The Sea EP, on The Trusty Record Co. label. All the songs were written, performed, and recorded by Whitfield, in a wide range of basements. Being the work of one person has not limited the range of influences, only focused them. Traditional folk structures are apparent, as is folk instrumentation. The 70's also are well represented, with moments on the album toeing a dreamy line. The five songs contained within it are a cleaning of the cupboards: A release of the best of the material written to this point, and a form of mental relief for the songwriter. The only way to rid yourself of ghosts is to turn them into something you can catch.

Live performances are when the exorcism begins. Playing Duck, Duck, Goose with an array of musicians serves to maintain the same song structures, but leaves room to expand on the themes and melodies started by the recorded versions. Weigh Anchors has toured to both coasts, and is booking another round of touring for August 2011. Currently featuring members of On Lock, The Grim Beat, and Mike Tod.

Lyrics

Keeper (version four)

Written By: Weigh Anchors

My keeper lives in the sea. She pulls me under and teaches me how to breathe. "The secret," she tells me, "is to close your eyes and press your lips to me." The weight of the sea doesn't bother me. My keeper stands on my feet. She says "How are you supposed to live if you're always trying to keep your shoes clean?" I answer easily, "I'll just toe the shore and wait for you to find me." The weight of those feet, doesn't bother me.

Bumblebee Symphony

Written By: Weigh Anchors

What kind of ghost do you think I am? Well OK, you're right, that's the right kind. It takes one to know one I suppose. Oh I know you know. I know you know all of them. The easiest person to lie to is yourself. I'll change for you, you know I'll change for you. Whenever I open my mouth up to explain, all that comes out is string, so much I can hardly sing. So I hired one hundred bumblebees to play this song for you, that's why it stings so much. But the words I wrote myself, that's why they hurt so much, you know I'm good at that stuff.

Darn Wings

Written By: Weigh Anchors

I want dirty feet. I want spiders in my tea. I want something cold enough to freeze the salty sea. Give me sparrow's wings. Sew them on to me. I will show you what I do with generosity. This could all fall apart, leave us standing in the mud. If I jump up high enough, maybe I'll sink into the ground.

A Girl Inside

Written By: Weigh Anchors

There's a girl inside of my chest. She's wearing her black dress, the one she puts on when she's lonley. She's gluing stars onto the roof, and she knows that I'd approve, if only I could see them. She's tying flowers in her hair, and up and down the stairs. Fake flowers are our favourite. The same with old hotel rooms and cars from 1972, or somewhere around there. She says, "Hey, you come live with me, yea, it will be just like the sea. We can learn to breathe together." I wish that I could climb down my throat and to her side, place my hands upon her shaking hips. I have something I should tell you; I have been thinking about your underwear. I bet they're all white, every pair.

The Palest Light

Written By: Weigh Anchors

Just as my eyes shut the sun exploded with the palest light across my features. It showed me how to take an image, break it down to pieces, spread it over mountains, send it to the ocean floor. For one only knows starvation when one's had it taken. Only when I'm hungry. Over my dead body will I give into this chemical reaction spinning out of cycle with forward direction.
