"Slabtown"

BITTERSWEET POP] Ayn Rand would probably not be too keen on Weight of Atlas, if for no other reason than the fact that the band doesn't beat around the infinite bush of pretentiousness. One thing author and band might have in common, though, is the fact that both would be enjoyed by Reed philosophy students. These dark indie rockers manage to instill foreboding pop songs with a light touch of politics that evokes She Wants Revenge with a decidedly lighter tone, intelligent lyrics, sparse instrumentation and an ear for the bittersweet. AP KRYZA. Slabtown. 9 pm. Cover. 21+.

Bio

Portland, Oregon band, Weight Of Atlas formed in the summer of 2006. Lifetime drummer, Erik Stromquist, turned singer/songwriter placed an online classified for a collaborator. Bass player and songwriter, Stephen Weber, replied and the two quickly began working on material. Both musicians wanted to recreate the atmosphere of 80's alternative rock, such as, New Order, The Smiths and The Cure and couple this sound with 90's and contemporary indie-rock. After several months of rehearsing, the group began playing shows with an ever-changing line-up that has included Shane Murray on lead guitar for live shows. With Erik Stromquist as lyrical composer, the group examines the global setting of the post-cold war west, toying with sentiments of isolation, politics, and globalization. W.O.A. has been compared to Interpol, She Wants Revenge, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and early Depeche Mode. In the winter of 2007, Weight Of Atlas entered Permapress studio to master their their E.P., "On Either Side of the River." The E.P. was released in 2008 and the band, still comprised Stromquist and Weber, have begun work on tracks for its second release which will be available toward the end of year
