Bio

SOLA AKA WEIRD MC is a Multilingual Performing/Recording Artiste/Lyricist,/Producer/ Composer whose sound is a Hybrid of HipHop/Afrobeat/Club Essence plus anything undefined. Her main influences are Fela Kuti, Missy Elliott, Jimi Hendrix, Angelique Kidjo, Lauryn Hill, Tina Turner and Lagbaja.
Weird MC – Africa’s First Lady of Hip Hop – inna Afrobeat style – is currently consolidating the extra-special vibes for her new album, video and related 12” previews, with her eyes set on a UK wide tour, International Festivals and an opportunity to break the USA in 2005. Wild and wonderful on stage she creates music that astounds and delights audiences and musicians alike and is embracing London’s Africa 2005 celebrations wholeheartedly with dates set for participation in Festivals presented by Out of Africa and Joyful Noise to name but two. Weird MC is building on a fabulous foundation laid in 2004 (which in turn built on previous seasons success and dedication), with worldwide press, major festivals in Europe and especially her brilliant contribution to the Black President Art and Legacy of Fela Kuti Festival, the hand in hand growth with Out of Africa, touring with the Shrine and the prestigious ‘Nollywood Awards’ (Nigerian Film Awards) in London. She’s one of the finest creators of post Fela Afrobeat. Weird MC, also known as the Rappatainer, is unusual as a leading female exponent of Afrobeat Hip Hop – gaining proper recognition for the genre with an award for best Nigerian Hip Hop Artist following her smash hit ‘Allen Avenue’. She not only writes her tracks, but also produces them. The Rappatainer boasts an impressive list of collaborators live and on disc, from Femi Kuti, Tony Allen and Lagbadja to Afro Celts, Shrine Syncro System, Ashley Beedle, JJC and 419, Wunmi, Ras and MC Lyte. She was a major attraction at the 2003 All Africa Games in Nigeria where she is a household name and regularly plays to crowds of double figure thousands. Weird MC has played major festivals and venues worldwide with her own band, with others and as a much sought after MC. Weird MC regularly features in worldwide media. See and listen at www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/africaonyourstreet.weirdmc-shtml for more lowdown Palava featuring Femi Kuti on sax, perhaps Weird MC’s best known number, is a worldwide favourite track on Charlie Gillett’s World 2003 (EMI) and on the Pop D’Europe compilation whilst her ‘African Woman’ has become an anthem. Recordings like ‘Ijoya’ and ‘The Way We Blow’ with new mixes created at JJC’s (AKA Skillz) renowned studio, see Weird MC introducing new club styles into her music whilst retaining her distinctive Afrobeat edge with lyrics in both English and Yoruba proving that ain’t nobody knows how to beat down the borders like the Weird MC. She’s exploring the unique frisson between the ancient talking drum and 21st Century DJ and MC science. Lately the Weird MC has been exploring a new Afro/Gospel strand as well. Is there no end to this woman’s creativity?
