A polished, five-song EP from Encinitas' Wendy Bailey, "It Ain't Rocket Surgery" offers an easy-on-the-ears flavor of power pop. Like a punched-up Edie Brickell, Bailey writes accessible pop songs that lean a bit toward the folk side ---- and then delivers them with a confident delivery wrapped around a warm, rich voice.

It all comes together at its best on "She Walks Groovy" and "Harmless," a knockout pair of pure AM-styled pop-rock nuggets. With jangly guitars and a loping beat behind her oh-so-cool vocals, both songs are classic 4-minute radio songs, textbook examples on writing a hit tune.

True, radio has changed and a well-crafted song with a stellar performance is no longer enough to get on the air. But for those of us living in San Diego County, Wendy Bailey is making some very nice ear candy.

Wendy Bailey plays at 9:30 p.m. today at the Tiki Bar in Pacific Beach, and at 8 p.m. Sunday at Brick by Brick in San Diego.

Wendy Bailey has brought her sound to Southern California after making Seattle and the Pacific Northwest her performance stomping
ground. Currently residing in Encinitas, CA., she is playing all over southern California with her band in tow. The Wendy Bailey Band has quickly garnered a reputation of an excellent live show, performing original melodic and catchy pop-rock songs all penned by Wendy. Voted Listener's Favorite for San Diego's Radio Sophie 103.7, and continuous rotation on local music radio shows as well as national and international podcasts. Signed to Blindspot Records in 2009, a 2010 release is currently in recording process.
