For Jay Adams, guitar feedback is much more than electric shards of noise.
“To me, it’s almost like the soul of the guitar interjecting itself into whatever you’re trying to play,” Adams says. “Feedback is my favorite sound the guitar makes. It’s not something I try to consciously do, but it happens and I let it happen.” Those interjections can be heard in preachersgun, a trio mixing “Live Evil” exploration, My Bloody Valentine heavy bliss and Adams’ falsetto-soul vocals.
The Greenville band’s sound changed dramatically after Bobby Marant moved from bass to drums and jazz ace Wendy McClain was brought in to handle the low-end. The new lineup scrapped all previous preachersgun material. Their gigs consisted entirely of improvised psychedelia. “Sometimes it would blow up in our face, but every gig there were one or two moments that were magic,” Adams says.
This summer, preachersgun returned to songwriting. They’re recording tunes in Marant’s upstairs studio, using a system where two musicians track their parts simultaneously while the other engineers the sessions. “We were riff-heavy soul-blues,” says Adams, whose roots include B.B. King and Mahalia Jackson. “Now, we’re getting into a shoegaze phase. I didn’t listen to a lot of rock music growing up. So everything is new to me. It’s not like, ‘Oh, that’s so 1990s.’ ”

Wendy McClain is bass player from Greenville, SC. Her musical journey began at the age of 12, the year in school when students could choose a music program to join. Mr. Magee, being an upright bassist, advised “You're tall, you should play the bass.” With this advice, Wendy was in business.
Later, she expanded to the bass guitar. As she improved over the years, she realized the importance of the bass to all kinds of music and enjoyed watching the heads of the crowd bob together in unison to her bass lines.
When time came to go to college, there was no other major considered. As she studied music at Southeastern University in Florida, she listened to anything she could get her hands on and played with any group she could find. She particularly enjoyed playing in the school's Jazz Band and smaller jazz combos. She spent her summers traveling with a Gospel group.
Now, Wendy can play just about any style, sight read, improvise and play in the pocket. She is also easy to work with, accepts criticism, has a wonderful attitude, is punctual and does not have a big ego. Wendy aspires to travel with her bass guitar and groove around the world.
