Bio

Western Boulevard's signature sound consists of more than style or era. There are plenty of rockabilly bands, yet few of them can swing. Conversly, there are tons of western swing bands; few of them can delve into the crude, key-challenged, inebriated world of honky-tonk. How do we do it?

Western Boulevard was birthed from a talented and truly dedicated group of musicians. We stand out because, individually, we come from amazingly diverse musical backgrounds. Our lead guitarist, Phil, began his musical life growing up in Brooklyn, NY, where he cut his teeth on classic rock and roll and R&B. To pay his rent, Phil has led a variety band for over 20 years, and that's where he met vocalist and entertainer Mitzi Davis, who has been his lead singer now for fifteen years. Her musical foundation is rooted in Broadway and the classic American Songbook, yet Phil has known that Mitzi has harbored a deep-seated love for country music, having a huge family spread out all over Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Thank god, our drummer, Mitch Montrose, has a true-blue country background, having played with Cornell Hurd and his "Mondo Hotpants Orchestra". Mitch then went on to form his own hillbilly jazz band, "The Hightoppers", and he has been drumming with "Porterhouse Bob and Down To The Bone" since 2000. We are joined by legendary fiddle player Brantly Kearns; any country afficianado knows he's been all over the map with every country artist around, from Dwight Yoakum to David Bromberg. We're stoked to have Brantly's country virtuoso and blessing! Bassist Dave Dimatteo plays every style of music out there, and is a phenomenal recording engineer to boot (just ask Mitzi, who recorded a CD of liturgical music with Dave!). And Chris Glik, our keyboardist, plays absolutely EVERYTHING! By the way, Chris has written and had performed all over the South country musicals as well.

When it comes to our swinging honky-tonk, we've been influenced by groundbreaking artists: Wanda Jackson, Kitty Wells, Jean Shepard, Carl Perkins, Elvis and Scotty Moore,The Beatles, Spade Cooley, Tex Ritter, Johnny Horton, Dwight Yoakum and Ernest Tubb, to name a few.

As we continue to work and grow together, we find that we're inspired to write our own material. Look for that in upcoming gigs. We're thrilled that we found each other; this is a band that gelled together gracefully and effortlessly; kind of ironic, since nobody thinks of grace and honky-tonk in the same sentence. Well, there you go; that's us.
