"Review: When Bears Attack!"

With their song “If I Had Eyes, Manhattan Could Fly“, When Bears Attack! lures you into to thinking you should hug your neighbor and get out your lighter just before they begin to peel your face off. Opening with a somber yet elegant melody the vocals shift from harmonious to screaming without a glitch and lead you through a dynamic mix of breakdowns and just the right seasoning of synth to make everything taste right. I am encouraged by the transitions in sound and mixture of elements where nuance and subtlety become as much a part of the package as blistering guitars and hair raising screams. When Bears Attacks displays a creative ability to utilize and master the play between components so that their music isn’t just a mash of noises but a symphony of brutality. If this song is any indication of what When Bears Attack! has in the works then the children of Illinois and far beyond will need to get educated on the danger of bears quickly.

Bio

Don’t let their youth tempt you into thinking the young men of When Bears Attack! are just another mama’s-basement screamo upstart. These Collingsville, IL rockers are combining their experiences with success and failure to piece together what is already becoming a Mid West mob of musical mayhem. Their creative exports aren’t exclusively held in their musical pursuits, laying foundations for other successful ventures such as Vision Again Clothing, the talons of WBA are only beginning to scratch the surface of the brittle musical crust.

Acknowledging that music holds a special power to take its listeners beyond the day-to- day grind, the tools of their craft are constantly being honed. Whether a song becomes a means of releasing aggression or a momentary rapture for the downcast, through music each can bypass obstacles in life to enjoy a melody together. When Bears Attack is taking their life’s story and weaving it into the fabric of their music, creating a platform for a community of those who are rising above the drab to grasp hold of their dreams. This is music for those who are on the offensive, a catalyst for a chorus of conquerors.

When Bears Attacks demonstrates a creative ability to utilize the play between tried and true components like hardcore breakdowns while fusing them with an adroit mix of synth and subtlety so that their music isn’t just a mash of noises but a symphony of brutality. Should early offerings from When Bears Attack be any indication of what these young men have in the works, then the children of Illinois and far beyond will need to get edu-ma-cated on the danger of bears rather quickly. Look for their debut EP, recording now with producer Cameron Mizell (I See Stars, Oceana) at Chango Studio, to drop later this year.
