"Flagapalooza to rock for Riordan"

Flagapalooza to rock for Riordan
DAILY SUN STAFF | Posted: Friday, March 12, 2010 5:00 am
Where else but Flagstaff would local musicians get together for a seven-hour jamfest to raise money for a 100-year-old state park threatened with closure?
That's exactly what will happen March 20 at the Green Room in downtown Flagstaff.
Dubbed Flagapalooza, the musical jamfest will feature some of Flagstaff's top artists and musicians playing for the Riordan Action Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the historic Riordan Mansion State Park.
Riordan is slated to close March 29, but local efforts are under way to figure out how to keep it open. Here's the backstory: To deal with a spiraling budget deficit, state lawmakers have swept funds for the state's park system, leading to the Parks Board decision to close 13 parks. Two -- Homolovi Ruins and Lyman Lake -- already are shut. Six others, including Riordan, will close March 29, with five more set to lock their gates on June 3.
Flagapalooza event organizers say locally grown rhythm and rhyme will be featured exclusively, along with local sustainable foods by Jonathon Netzky and Local Alternatives Catering.
"The night will include only Flagstaff 'home grown' performances. We're excited that we're able to showcase everything from traditional Celtic to full-tilt rock," said Flagapalooza producer and Whiskey Rodeo guitarist Chase Carpini. "There will be an equal combination of acoustic and electric acts on both stages. Flagstaff has so many great artists; we've jammed a two-day festival into one incredible night. There's truly something for every fan of live music here."
The line-up at Flagapalooza includes:
-- Gravy -- Gravy returns for this special engagement on the heels of their recent CD release "Back in the Day."
-- Whiskey Rodeo -- Fresh off its recently released second studio CD "Whiskey Rodeo's Blood Revenge Part 2" which has already garnered radio airplay.
-- Dave McGraw and Crow Wing -- Dave McGraw's recent debut studio collaboration with Crow Wing is titled "Coyotes Came Around."
-- Nolan McKelvey and the Civilian Contemplation Corps
-- The Knockabouts -- One of our most popular Irish Pub Bands and a Flagstaff favorite.
-- Aly Jay -- Aly Jay's second full-length CD "Upside Down" was released this past December and features performances by Nolan McKelvey and Chase Carpini.
Flagapalooza will be March 20, from 7 p.m.-2 a.m., at the Green Room. Tickets for are $12 in advance and $15 at the door on March 20.
Only 500 tickets will be sold.
Tickets are available online at Flagapalooza.com or at Animas Trading Company or the Green Room box office. This celebration of local talent is a 21-and-over event.
For ticket and event information, visit Flagapalooza.com or Flagstaffgreenroom.com, or call the Flagapalooza hotline at (928) 255-1934.
