Whistlin Charlie

Whistlin Charlie is a new kind of power trio from Baltimore, MD. Their sound taps into the sensibilities of many different kinds of listeners with their colorful array of influences including Hendrix, Mingus, Monk, Fela Kuti, Tom Waits, Queens of the Stone Age, and Stevie Wonder hidden under and heavy blanket of rock. Whistlin Charlie's members are each unique with their styles and approaches to making music. Guitarist/singer/songwriter Jon Caplan leaves no corner of a song empty with his lush and precise yet wailing style of fingerpicked electric guitar. Garrett Long's basslines stomp as they weave and harmonize. Jonathan Steele sets the cadence with catchy beats that will surprise and capture you within the groove. And it all blends seamlessly.

So far in 2009, we've seen the release of their eponymous debut album, airplay on WTMD and 98rock in Baltimore, and shows at Ottobar, Fletchers, Joe Squared, and the world class 13th Floor @ The Belvedere. They've got more big performances on the near horizon including 2 more shows at the 13th floor, a summer festival appearance, and a record release party. This all comes after a year's worth of shows in and around the Baltimore in 2008. It seems that Whistlin' Charlie ball is really beginning to roll, and they are one of the hottest bands coming up through Baltimore.
