inger Whitney Jackson is no stranger to music business but after years of sharing the stage in a group, the New Jersey native has stepped out to showcase her abilities as a solo artist. On her debut solo project, Who Have You Met Lately, Jackson does just that!
Who Have You Met Lately features 10-original tracks , “5 AM”, “Lost Hearts”, “Pain”, “Better Than That”, “Charlie”, “Riddle Me Dat”, “Paradise”, “Puzzle”, “Run For Your Life”, and “Outro”.
With no guest appearances, Jackson gives fans an in-depth view of her vocal range. I can’t help but view Who Have You Met Lately as a vocal mash-up of recording artists Jhené Aiko and Jazmine Sullivan. At times, Jackson’s vocal are crisp, clean and refined. On the other hand, the singer can bring down in the valleys with her vocal runs/riffs.
Who Have You Met Lately features simple surface writing and production. On song “5 AM” we get a glimpse of trap-pop, “Pain” and “Charlie” are easily indefinable as a Hip-Hop/R&B blend. “Charlie” is Whereas “Riddle Me Dat”, the project’s breakout track, is well-crafted blend of Hip-Hop with a hint of reggae. This makes it hard to understand the singer’s sonic vision for the project. On the other hand, the mix of musical genres make Who Have You Met Lately that much stronger.
Overall, Who Have You Met Lately was a great safe first step for Whitney Jackson. The airiness of vocals allowed her space to move in-between tracks. However, while be do understand the logic behind not having any guest appearances on the project, tracks like “Pain” and “Charlie” would surely benefit from a sweet-16.
Don’t miss Whitney Jackson in her first solo performance at Hat City Kitchen on Friday, May 13! For more information and to purchase tickets be sure to follow Whitney Jackson on Instagram and Twitter. -
