The Orchid

The Orchid

BandAlternativeRock

The Orchid are a four-piece instrumental post-rock band from Washington, DC.

Part shoegaze, part post-punk, part psychedelia, our sound is an effects-laden lull and attack on the listener. A dialectic of jubilation and gloom; anticipation and crescendo. It is patient music for impatient times.

Biography

The Orchid are a four-piece instrumental post-rock band from Washington, DC.

Part shoegaze, part post-punk, part psychedelia, their sound is an effects-laden lull and attack on the listener. It is a dialectic of jubilation and gloom; confidence and uncertainty; discord and resolution; anticipation and crescendo. This is patient music for impatient times.

The Orchid formed in 2008 with guitarists Jim Jones and Jason Garber sharing ideas and musical influences. Ex-City-State drummer Joao Malhinha and bassist Clay Redding, who played with Joao in Glenndoring, were added to the lineup shortly thereafter. James Wolf, also a violinist in fellow DC band Fern Knight, became the fifth member in 2010, as a multi-instrumentalist primarily focused on violin and keys. In 2011, Jim departed and James assumed guitar duties as well.

"Beyond The Vast Endless Sea" is the band's latest release, hitting the streets in July 2012. This full-length release was recorded in September 2011 and mixed by Eamonn Aiken at The Bastille Studio in Arlington, VA. Tim Gerak (Six Parts Seven, If These Trees Could Talk) of Mammoth Cave Studios in Denver, CO, mastered the album.

The “New Mexico EP” serves as the band’s debut release. Recorded by Jason over multiple sessions during the cold DC winter of 2010, Tim Gerak at Mammoth Cave Studios handled the mixing and mastering duties.

Early praise for the “New Mexico EP”:

“…think big, think lush, think hopeful, think perfect for a more laid back Friday afternoon.”
