"Whosah-It's Not Just Me In Here"

A high-output, optimistic, rhythm-latent performance is always expected of local band Whosah. The band’s combination of synthy undertones and upbeat lyricism make for classic pop rock, but that’s not to say the band lacks attitude. The incorporation of a childish nature that manages to be simultaneously profound is the band’s trademark.

Whosah’s EP It’s Not Just Me In Here continues this tradition with tenacity, delivering a product with a fresh flavor, but the overall sound should be familiar to long-time fans.

Tracks like “Let’s Not” and “I’m the Bad Guy” addresses with enthusiasm some big questions, such as wishing life away and the trouble with relationships. The band’s heavy lyrical themes allows the audience to reflect, but doesn’t totally distract from having a good time.

It’s Not Just Me In Here is the band’s first official contribution to the music world. As their debut, it manages to put its best foot forward. Audiences that enjoy positive vibes in easy-to-dance-along-to music will not be disappointed. This album carries enough rhythmically charged energy to make its way around.

Whosah has laid it out for us nicely. It’s Not Just Me In Here is a strong beginning, a promising take on the world of pop rock. Regardless of the future direction of the band, their strong optimism will always promote results, and whether or not you choose to take their hand, they’ll always hold it out to you. - The Wake Magazine

"Whosah: Brothers By Blood and Music"

In a world over-saturated with illegal music downloads, generic carbon-copy pop-rock bands, and actors-turned-musicians begging us to take them seriously—there is something to be said for a handful of youngsters toughing it out on today’s music scene. Brothers Spencer Grimes (17; lead vocals, guitar), Mack Grimes (16; vocals, bass), Dave Grimes (21; vocals, drums) along with Dallas Erdahl (19; vocals, guitar) and Corin McHargue (19; synth, programming) make up one of our most ambitious and level-headed local bands—Whosah.

Creating music that teeters on the edge of pop, indie and electro, Whosah simply wants to be heard. “We all have a very realistic outlook on the future. We know how hard it is to make it in the music industry, and even so—we haven’t adopted a sink-or-swim attitude towards the goal of ‘hitting it big.’” Dallas says. “We are looking to bring a positive message to anyone who wants to listen, and we know we don’t have to be big stars to brighten someone’s day.”

Whosah’s outlook on the fate of their success is refreshing. Not only are they aware of the challenges they will face, but they are also cognoscente of other duties to which they are bound. All of the boys are involved in activities outside of Whosah; sports, jobs, and school. “As a whole, we are some of the most laid back, yet incredibly busy kids you will ever meet,” Dave admits, pointing to Spencer as a prime example. “He’s a member of NHS, president of Engineering Club, a private guitar instructor, frontman of Whosah, and all the while upholding a 4.0 GPA in high school.”

While the amount of energy and motivation it takes to keep up with their demanding schedules is admirable, the boys of Whosah are the first to admit how hard it can be. “At times, the band can feel like a needy friend in the midst of triple-booked calendars,” Dave says. But Spencer adds, “We just have to figure out how much of a commitment we’re actually willing to give. What will we give up in order to play together? Miss a track practice? Skip a class? Sometimes we do. But other times, Whosah is the thing that has to be sacrificed.”

And it’s with that responsible stance that has given the boys their parents’ blessing all along. Without a second’s hesitation, the guys consider their mothers and fathers among their number one fans. By setting the expectation from the beginning that the guys should have aspirations apart from being in a band, the parents of Whosah are able to fully support their talented offspring. “They come to almost every show, wearing Whosah shirts and everything,” Dave says. “We couldn’t have asked for more supportive parents.”

Underneath Whosah’s practical approach to life as a band, lies a raw passion for music that is intoxicating to anyone who crosses their path. It’s a rarity these days to find a band that truly appreciates the bare bones of music; of what music means and how it affects people. Dallas sums it up best. “Feelings cannot simply be described—they can only be felt,” he says. “Music is a medium in which we can express our feelings to others; a way to let others feel the way we feel.”

In the upcoming months, Whosah will be focusing on enlarging their online presence, adding new songs to their set list, and securing gigs at nearby bars and restaurants, all the while keeping up with the other daily activities that demand their attention. But when it comes down to it, there seems to be a permanent spot in each of the boys for Whosah. “Being in this band with these people has become a big part of who I am,” Dave says. “There’s just something so organically us about the music that doesn’t get expressed in any other avenue of life.” - Maple Grove Magazine

""It's Not Just Me In Here" Release Party"

Last Wednesday, a local band released celebrated the release of their sophomore album "It's Not Just Me in Here" with a night of eclectic acts. Whosah, the title artist of the evening, is a local group hailing from Maple Grove, Minn. They now call the U of M their home and are widely recognized across the Twin Cities. Last spring, they won the opportunity to open for Matt Kearney at the U's annual Spring Jam music festival. Since their debut album, "Having Fun and Playing Games" released in October of 2010, they have been playing shows, refining their sound and developing new music for their second album.

Composed of three brothers and a close friend, Whosah knows how to have fun on stage and engage the audience. Their hour-long set at Honey in Minneapolis last Wednesday night way full of energy and clever lyrics.

Whosah's album release concert was all about bringing friends together to play the music they loved. They definitely knew how to create a family of their audience.

It was clear that the musicians not only were friends but deeply respected one another's art. I went to the concert a high school groupie and left with four new artists on my "Must Buy" list. - Augsburg College Echo

Bio

Rarely do three individuals possess as powerful an electric synergy on stage as Whosah. Driven by playful antics and the desire to relate personally to any crowd, they are simultaneously comforting while being on the inventive edge of indie-pop, featuring jivin guitars, tight n' fat drums, and Top 40-style synth licks.

The release of "It's Not Just Me in Here" began the bands active professional and touring career. The record's flagship single "Oxygen" brings out the band's potential to both make the listener break out in dance, and bring them to the reality that it's okay to celebrate the universal need to have something to rely on.

Not only was the release widely embraced by the local scene with a packed-out Northeast-Minneapolis release show, but it also earned Corporate endorsement (Target Inc, Back-To-School Campaign) and spots with Scars on 45, Chastity Brown, Mat Kearney, Kevin Devine, Now Now, Love Out Loud, and others and B and A level events.

This recent success has brought about the expansion of the band’s natural desire to collaborate- with the upcoming release in November of 2014. “It’s Not Just Remix in Here” is more than just a remix album, its a collective agreement alongside personal friends the band has made throughout the country. Artistic contributions from DJs and friends from New Orleans, Kansas City, and even England display the band’s passion for including people around them in enjoying life and making music.

The release event itself (Nov 11, 2014), like the collaboration of the project, will feature local and touring acts, artistic displays, a photo booth, BBQ-style backyard games, and of course will center around a live translation of the Remix EP. A celebration of the band’s progress so far and an anticipation of more touring to follow, the show will be a showcase of any Whosah event: the festivities will be fun, the energy will be real, and musical experience will leave you playfully twisting your hips and thoughtfully tapping your temple.

Regardless if you’re a promoter, agent, or venue of any size, Whosah would like to connect with you, know you, but most importantly, befriend you. Contact us via info@whosah.com to book an event or include the Whosah experience in what you already have planned.
