Bio

“I do not wish to limit myself to the music which is played in my village. There are so many villages all over the world.“
(Slavko Ninic, band leader of Wiener Tschuschenkapelle, February 1996, Zimbabwe-Mozambique)

Why "Tschuschenkapelle"?
“The word ´tschusch´ is a kind of derogatory term coined by Austrian puritans to label ethnic minority immigrants. The name Wiener Tschuschenkapelle, ie. ´tschusch´s singing in Vienna, is a politically charged irony. The music itself is a celebration of borderlessness and cultural integration.” (Guy Dowsett ©2004 The Provokator Magazine)

Vienna has always been a melting pot for people from South-East Europe. These people came as ‘guest- workers’, refugees or migrants making Vienna their second home which consequently has resulted in an enormous economic and cultural enrichment of the city. Part of it is the very creative but also ambivalent inter-relationship between the diaspora in Vienna and the various countries the people are originating from.
We have extensive experience in playing live on stage, on the radio and on television, at street parties and "mega events", both in Austria and abroad.
Politically we stand up for a peaceful togetherness of all people, and we export this message beyond the Austrian borders in numerous tours. We have played numerous concerts, forgotten and unforgettable, in Canada and in Africa, Bielefeld and at Brunnenmarkt (Vienna).
During a four-week tour through Zimbabwe and Mozambique in February 1996 we brought music from South East Europe to South East Africa.
We toured Austria, from East to West, from North to South, we have played at birthday parties and theatre premieres, at weddings and funerals, at international as well as local festivals, in front of audiences ranging from hundreds of thousands (“Lichtermeer“ Vienna - big anti-Nazi rally in Austria that drew a crowd of hundreds of thousands) to seven people (the lowermost record).
We played "live" on the Austrian television, the Hungarian television, the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (German station), the Swiss television, the Canadian television and the state-owned television of Mozambique.
We even had the honour of playing with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Vienna State Opera, we performed in the "Merry Widow" (Franz Lehár) under the conductor John Eliot Gardiner.

In 2009 we celebrated our 20th birthday, meanwhile there are twelve CD‘s made by the Tschuschenkapelle to choose from. The last album "Haus am Wasser" was released 2009. All of our twelve albums are a must for the expert and a delight for all lovers of Balkan music.
