Aight….I know you’ve been holding your breath for some new heat. So, to give you the up and up on what’s to come, The debut album from new artist, Wilchild (the kid) is coming to blaze the nation with fiah trax that are guaranteed to rock ya soul.

I’ve had the opportunity to chop it up with Wilchild about his upcoming album titled “Underground Elevation Part I- The Movement” (releasing January 31, 2009) and I tell ya, this brotha is most def getting it for the Lord! Wilchild fills us in on how he got started and encourages us as the body of Christ, to seek him in all that we do.

Wilchild states, “First, artist need to look within themselves. The question should be; what am I doing it for? Am I doing it to save souls? If they are doing it for the wrong reasons, then they need to bow out respectfully, look within themselves, and get closer to God.”

For more, please read the interview.

Porscha: What’s good Wilchild? Give us a lil background on your upbringing to give the readers some insight on how you got started, not only as a HHH artist, but also as a Christian.

Wilchild: I came here from Africa at the age of 11. I moved around a lot. Coming from Africa, I moved to Maryland, from Maryland to DC, from DC to Savannah, from Savannah to ATL. My fam and I realized this is where God had placed us. I’ve always been raised in the church. I was raised Catholic but you know I grew up a Christian. I didn’t understand the Gospel until I got saved. I didn’t fully commit until I got to ATL. When I got saved, God started opening up a lot of doors. Myself and some of the guys that I grew up in the church with, started a rap group called F.I.R.E. (Forever In righteousness Enduring).

That’s basically how I got introduced to Gospel Hip Hop. First group I’ve ever listened to was Cross Movement. Then I got into T-Bone, Mr. Real, L.G. Wise and so on.

Porscha: New album….actually your first official debut album, How does it feel?

Wilchild: It feels banana’s son…I’m just joking. (Laugh aloud) For real though, I’m really excited, its been a true labor of love. God has put me at a place where I’ve always wanted to be. I have a lot of great people around me and I have a lot of great artists who are apart of this album.

Porscha: Tell us a lil more about your new album dropping January 31. 2009?

Wilchild: The title came about 5 years ago. The name of the album is called Underground Elevation Part 1- The Movement. God gave it to me and I didn’t know what it meant at first. The spirit later revealed to me that it meant elevating the gospel through the depths of a dark and sinful world. If you go underground, you can’t get no darker than that. It’s a 3 part series. Part 1 is the Movement that’s coming out January 31st with a lot of great features.

Porscha: Define Wilchild.

Wilchild: It means child with in limits….its an acronym backwards.

If you step out of the limits of God’s grace and mercy, you are pretty much in sin. I want to be in his bosom. I want to walk with God at all cost. Nobody is perfect but I want to stay in his love. I don’t want to step out of his love or his favor that he’s shown me in my life.

Walking down a street in Atlanta, it just popped in my head. I believe it was the Holy Spirit that gave me that name and I just meditated on it. And that’s where the name came from.

Porscha: Who have been your influences?

Wilchild: I’ve been influenced greatly by Cross Movement, Reach Records, and just a lot of those guys. Even secular artists; not glorifying what they do but meaning watching what they’re doing is fueling the fire within me to do what God wants me to do. We have to go out there full steam.

Porscha: What has helped you to build your craft as an artist?

Wilchild: Just digging in the word and practice. Prayer, worship, praise, and just practice. That’s the motto.

Porscha: What’s your CD player right now?

Wilchild: Lecrae and Trip Lee. That 20 20 and that Rebel…My Goodness! (lol)

Porscha: On a more universal topic. What’s your take on the state of the Christian Rap genre and how can we start to heal the wounds?

Wilchild: The state right now is a lot self-glorification. You know like what I have, what I got on, what I’m riding? It’s coming to the point where the line between Secular and Christian music is getting blurred. You know it’s up to you. It starts with you first. It feels as if they’re doing it for monetary gain. First, artist need to look within themselves. The question should be; What am I doing it for? Am I doing it to save souls? If they are doing it for the wrong reasons, then they need to bow out respectfully, look within themselves, and get closer to God. As consumers, you need to ask yourselves are you getting the word out of it or are you just buying it for crunk beats and something to dance to? Will this touch my soul? Build me up and bring me closer to God?

Porscha: Besides music, what else is your passion?

Wilchild: I just love music. I want people to see the passion that I have and in turn are blessed from it based on the music that I do and my lifestyle.

Porscha: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Wilchild: Married with some kids but still taking the gospel worldwide. Something like a gospel hip hop missionary.

Porscha: How can we contact you?

Wilchild: You can reach me on myspace @ www.myspace.com/savechild

Porscha: Any words of encouragement that you will like to leave us with?

Wilchild: Just live and let God.
