"Higher Ground"

Will

Like a mutant cross between The Pogues, Modest Mouse and the Stanley Brothers, Burlington’s Will aren’t afraid to play a little rough. While the band’s catchy tunes and multi-layered harmonies are plenty inviting, there’s also a mean rock engine under their polished hood. Rugged electric and acoustic guitars, punchy bass and earnest lyrics drive the band’s hauntingly authentic Americana. With their self-titled debut in the can, expect to hear plenty more from these salty dogs throughout ’05.

"Seven Bands To Watch"

Poking around town looking for first-rate live music is sometimes exhausting, but when you catch a good local act it all becomes worthwhile. The group's (will) stunning performance at the Radio Bean last week came as a surprise. By droping their overtly "rock" material in favor of acoustic-based Americana, the band has uncovered a compelling and authentic voice. Intricate but unforced, their tunes had charm, wit and dynamics - qualities that they seemed to lack in their previous guise. Sounding like Modest Mouse recast as hardscrabble landsmen, Will's three guitarists created beautiful melodies without steping on each other's toes, and the bands's hushed harmonies and haunting lyrics showed more depth than I may have realized. Here's hoping they continue to explore this direction - guys, if you're reading: It works! Will doesn't have a proper recording yet, but if they manage to document the sounds I heard last Thursday, the future looks bright.

Bio

The long winters and backwoods of Northeastern America rarely produce a band as indicative of it's upbringing as 'will'. Will formed in 2003, using
Burlington, VT as its home base of operations. The band's five members are David Anderson (guitar, vocals), Matt Marro (drums), Conor McQuade
(guitar, keys, mandolin), Eoin Noonan (vocals, guitar, mandolin, banjo) and
Jeremy Woods (bass, vocals).
All members grew up in Vermont with the exception of Eoin Noonan, who moved to the Green Mountains from Ireland at age fifteen. An Irish flavor is just one of the wide range of influences that combine to form the indie/folk rock that is will.
