There are some individuals God decides to bless with one amazing gift. And then there are others who seem to be showered with a variety of talents. Accepting the callings as a Visionary, Teacher, Author, and Musician, William Rucker is such a man. His motto, “Enlarging Vision, Activating Faith, Igniting Worship”, sums up the mandate that has been placed on this young man’s life. Through his God-given skills, he is ready to serve, inspire and commission others to walk in their purpose.

For the Detroit native, music has always been a passion. It was from this discovery that William formed the singing group, Like Hymn, in 2001. William and Like Hymn, then a small aggregation, was content to minister at local musicals around his hometown. But in 2003, the Revered Larry L. Simmons, Pastor of Baber Memorial A.M.E. Church, recognized and confirmed the call of God on his life and installed William as the Minister of Music. Having studied vocal performance at the world-renowned Interlochen Arts Academy, and music education at Oakland University, he solidified his calling by leading worship, directing the choir, and raising up a multimedia ministry at Baber.

After taking leaving the music industry for several years to focus on his spiritual calling, in 2009 it became obvious that the music world was missing what William had to offer. William’s unique and refreshing brand of gospel meets smooth jazz is unlike anything in the marketplace today. Unlike many “gospel saxophonists” William maintains the traditional gospel sound, simply performing lead vocals through his saxophone. It is the strength of his backing ensemble, the HYMN singers, that truly sets this saxophonist apart.

Lead by Tymara Spears, a solo gospel artist, the HYMN singers are featured as much as the lead saxophonist himself. This balance allows William Rucker and the HYMN singers to captivate music lovers of all kind – whether they are jazz lovers, gospel enthusiast, or a combination of both. In addition to a strong gospel repertoire of classics and originals, William Rucker & the HYMN singers also have a strong set of contemporary smooth jazz songs that are sure to please audiences of jazz festivals across the nation and around the globe. This versatility places William Rucker & the HYMN singers into a class of their own.

William Rucker has been the featured artist at many major events locally and even internationally. Some of his favorites have been Detroit’s “Ribs & Soul Festival,” “Gospel Fest,” “Praise at the Park,” and of course many of the areas most prominent churches. He has also been the feature performer internationally in Ghana, West Africa’s Tribe of Judah Camp concert.

William Rucker & the HYMN singers look forward to releasing their debut recording, William Rucker Presents: the HYMN project, in the fall of 2010, with a single due out by mid summer.
