"Wow!"

“I AM IMPRESSED!!! What a voice!! I was in another room when this came on, and I thought it was Lisa Stansfield, or maybe Corinne Drewery (of Swing Out Sister) -- I've found another voice to put on my list of favorite singers!!! Very nice...”

"Soulful Jazz Release"

Willow Brocke’s self-titled first release is a relaxing treat for fans of soulful jazz. Perfect for easy listening at the end of the day, one can easily become lost in the sensual and powerful dynamic melodies while finding satisfaction in the modern accompaniment.

The band is solid in their execution of contemporary jazz, and their style fits nicely with the velvety dips and sweet peaks of Willow’s voice. The songwriting is honest, something not often experienced with many of today’s artists forced into a more mainstream, simplistic writing style.

Willow Brocke’s album has been a successful addition to CJSW’s Jazz library and we look forward to hearing more from this promising local artist.

"Self-titled Album Features Calgary Jazz Greats"

Calgary singer-songwriter Willow Brocke celebrates the release of her self-titled debut CD Willow Brocke on Saturday, September 20th at Beat Niq in Calgary.

The smooth jazz album features eight of Willow’s originals along with fresh arrangements of two cover tunes. Marking the sound are the catchy pop melodies, lush jazz harmonies and deep grooves, the album being described as reminiscent of jazz/pop/rock giants Steely Dan during the 1980’s.

Brocke has chosen a first-class roster to accompany her on both the album and for the CD release celebration, with leading Calgary jazz musicians including Aaron Young (guitar), Sheldon Zandboer (piano, keyboards), Rubim De Toledo (bass) and Jon May (drums), with background vocals contributed by Johanna Sillanpaa

"Driving Into Winter"

Willow Brocke’s Driving Into Winter is a song that you must hear now. It is the perfect song to listen to when you are cuddling up to your significant other on a cold night. Willow’s vocals are smooth and lush, very reminiscent of Basia.

The lyrics beautifully illustrate travel in a snow storm and somehow make it seem like a sexy thing instead of the incredible frustrating and often terrifying experience that it actually is.

The song is so soothing that the insanity of driving on a snow covered icy road might just be diminished a few notches. I know I’m going to be putting this song on a CD for my winter travels, and even if I'm not driving, I'll want to listen to to get the beautiful imagery of snow covered roads outside and a world that just might stop turning long enough to enjoy this lovely song.

Bio

Willow Brocke is an outstanding entertainer as well as a composer and vocalist. Her lyrics are honest and surprising - drawn from her unique life experience as well as her Cherokee and Norwegian heritage. Her soulful voice and dynamic range soar beautifully over her talented band which is made up of some of the best jazz and session players in Western Canada. Like Willow, they are equally at home in the genres of jazz, R&B, Soul and Pop music. Willow co-composed eight of the songs on her newly released CD with pianist Sheldon Zandboer to create a unique original sound that blends pop and jazz elements over hot grooves - in a dynamic, yet soothing listening experience that appeals to a sophisticated adult audience. Video for the single "Driving into Winter", directed by Alberta filmaker Ian Matheson is now in post production and will be released in June of 2009.

The band also performs surprising covers of other popular artists that make audiences sit up and take notice - while preserving the most beloved elements of these crowd favourites.
