"Six Foot Halo Releases New Album On Its Own"

The power in knowing you Did It Yourself – Six Foot Halo releases new album on its own

By SONJA SKVARLA

In the recording industry, what once required hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce can now be done in a college dorm room. Many up-and-coming artists, and even established artists like Ani DiFranco, are turning their backs to major representation to produce their own records.

With publicity stunts causing blame wars and organizations requiring parental guidance labels, the pros and cons of major and indie labels are to be carefully weighed by artists.

Six Foot Halo, formerly the Wil Seabrook Band, has worked with a major label but got out while the getting was good. The band left Madonna's Maverick Records, choosing instead to record on its own. The band released "Inside" in March 2004.

"We’ve been involved in every aspect of production – writing, arranging, recording, mixing, mastering, art design – all of it," says Seabrook. "This has been our creation at every moment and that freedom allows you to relax in a way you can’t when you feel like you have to answer to a committee, as happens with a major label situation, with every decision."

But artists know that listeners are used to a more polished sound because of advances in technology and increased studio standards.

"You want to take the listener on the most interesting, varied journey you can," Seabrook says.

But this makes the process more tedious and time-consuming. Instead of touring during post-production, the band was in the studio dissecting bridges and mixing solos.

But patience paid off as the project became something all members could be proud of.

"We approached the whole process democratically, trying out every idea that anyone suggested before we made a final decision," Seabrook says.

As with any artist trying to be recognized by their audience, dollar signs can cause nightmares. Small budgets affect almost all up-and-coming artists, but most who succeed despite these limitations see it as a source of pride instead of a frustration.

But no matter where and how an album is recorded, it’s got to begin and end with the music.

"The labels can help you reach a larger audience, but it’s always up to you as an artist to decide who you are as a creative being and to share that uncompromisingly with your audience."

Bio

Wil Seabrook has lived a creative lifetime in his few years in the music business. An indie deal as a singer/songwriter led to extensive touring throughout the US and press tours of the UK, culminating in a major label deal for what had become the Wil Seabrook Band.

A year spent touring with world class groups from Dave Matthews Band and Vertical Horizon to Sister Hazel and Dishwalla ended with the release of the band's self-titled EP, with the first single charting at AAA and commercial radio and being featured on TV shows such as "Dawson's Creek." The band returned to their indie routine with their follow up CD, Inside, touring relentlessly and selling thousands of copies at live shows all over the country.

2005 ushered in a new era for Wil, going back to his musical roots as a solo artist, his craft and musical direction much improved with the wisdom of so many nights on the road. His indie-EP, New, is a testament to his willingness to take risks stylistically in his relentless search to capture on tape the music he has heard inside his head for as long as he can remember. "These songs are more simple, more direct, " says Wil. "I've spent so much of the last few years finding my own voice, musically and as a person. This music is the closest I've come to getting what's inside out for the world to hear. It's exciting and so alive for me. I wouldn't have it any other way."

Wil was also one of the 15 finalists vying to be the lead singer of Aussie rock band INXS on CBS' summer hit 'Rockstar:INXS'. "TV is an interesting alternate universe", says Wil of the experience. "I made some great friends and I still get emails from fans around the world as a result of the show."

With steady industry buzz about the new material, Wil recently signed a deal with Universal's hot new label, Mercy Records. Studio time is slated for spring 2007 with a full time touring schedule to follow. Talks are under way with an Australian label regarding distribution and an Australian tour.
