German born Wiltrud (pronounced Vil-trood) is quickly becoming an International singer and a new light shining brightly in the genre of World music. Her debut CD “In a Different Light” is beautiful and intriguing in a way that makes you want to listen more and perhaps even meditate on your own Inner life, letting her voice and the music take you on a journey out of the mundane.
At first listen, her voice draws you in. The first and title track, “In a Different Light”, demonstrates this in the way Wiltrud’s pure classically trained vocal tone pairs with music that has an electronica feel. The result is quite provocative. It reminds one of Enya but Wiltrud’s voice is more substantial than Enya’s and her lyrics, melodies and music production are a bit more complex. When asked about her musical influences Wiltrud says, “I can’t deny my classical background and the fact that I have sung and still sing so much Mozart, Bach, Schubert and other classical composers. In the popular field I listened and observed the work of Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Sarah Brightman, the work of Enigma...[also] this production has Ennio Morricone Elements.” One of the songs that stands out is “In Your Light”, the lyrics of which was inspired by the Persian Poet Rumi of the 13th Century according to Wiltrud. This song says Wiltrud, “is the main theme for me...’in your light I learn how to love, in your light I learn how to sing...’ this is how I perceive myself as a singer and performer. I am an instrument, if I am lucky, a channel...that will uplift the listeners and let them and me feel light”. Another favorite song of mine is a song called “fears” with elements of ‘spoken word’ and live ‘interviews’ which addresses this new world we can’t seem to escape in this so called “war on terror”. “I want to encourage us all to look deeper into things and not believe what is presented to us daily, for example in the subway or by the news [media]”, says Wiltrud.
There is something for everyone in this Album. In “Fly High” one can hear even a bit of Country influence in the Acoustic and Dobro guitars and mandolin that almost have a Pedal Steel sound mixed with percussion and other World instruments. In “Longing” there is even a piece of a Mozart Aria snuck into an arrangement with percussion, morricone guitars, zither, and corean violin arranged and played by Janzoulou. Recorded in Berlin the whole production marries such different instruments for a haunting combination of Classical, Pop, Lounge and World genres that defies categorization. “harlem a nuit” (translated: Harlem at Midnight) written and produced by Richard Augustin adds some Jazz saxophone to the mix from Duke Guillaume along with a sensual African beat. The fine arrangements by producer Janzoulou make this album stand out as a gem in the genre of World Music. Other musicians who stand out are guitarist Bindi, drummer Rene Rennefeld and violinist Silke Volland as well as fine piano playing from co-producer Wiltrud herself.
Each listen to this rich debut album brings out more to the ear and the heart. International singer and recording artist Wiltrud’s debut Album “In a Different Light” is a triumph and a must have in any music lover’s collection.
