Windlestray

Myself (Ross) and Jen formed Windlestray in Summer 2008 after a number of stop/start attempts with other projects. We wanted to create an outlet for our songs and enlisted the help of Homework bassist Ali Dennis and Edinburgh born drummer Rory MacDonald. Originally started off very folk influenced we soon started to think a little heavier incorporating influences like biffy clyro (Blackened Sky/Vertigo of Bliss), Fields, Fleetwood Mac, Minus the Bear etc. In 2009 we released our first e.p to a sold out wee red bar in Edinburgh (thanks to everyone who was there, great fun!). The e.p was recorded in Mull with producer Euan McRae and this was an ideal location for us as it allowed us to get away from the city and focus on what had to be done. A big part of the Windlestray influence is the idea of space and the highs and lows of being in a remote place, (I grew up on Mull). We have recently decided to drop piano and focus much more on our vocals thus leaving more space for guitars and the odd synth part. We believe the synth brings a bit more edge to our sound without getting in the way of the vocals. It is also working better with the guitar and I feel we are starting to mix the ambience of loved bands like the album leaf and metronomes with the progy side of biffy and the harmonies of fields. We hope you hear these influences in our songs but come away with the idea we could be crafting a sound of our own. Cheers, Ross.
