Bio
Wintersleep hail from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (Halifax also gave us Sloan, Buck 65, Sarah McLachlan). Their first show was April 2002. Debut album was released April 2003 and their second album in February 2005. With a couple albums, a couple videos and a couple hundred shows under their belts Wintersleep are settling in for what looks to be a promising creative experience.
Wintersleep’s sophomore album, Untitled, released February 2005, was recorded in Halifax by Laurence Currie (Sloan, One Chord to Another). Drawing comparisons to Radiohead, Mogwai, Hayden and Low, the album debuted on the Canadian Top 200 sales charts and quickly rose to number three on the national campus radio charts, where after 14 weeks, it is still sitting tight in the top 30 (June 2005). They have released two videos, "Sore" and their latest, "Danse Macabre" which is currently receiving favorable airplay on MuchMusic. A video for "Jaws of Life" will be shot in September by Ghostmilk Studios (Modest Mouse, Death From Above, Broken Social Scene).
The band’s first single, “Orca”, went top ten on maritime charts for nearly a year and became the most requested song ever in Q104’s (Atlantic Canada’s biggest rock radio station) 20+ year history.
Having shared the stage and traveled the highways with notable indie acts Broken Social Scene, Stars, Constantines, Rheostatics, The Microphones, Wooden Stars, Sam Roberts and Ron Sexsmith; Wintersleep has kept very busy performing. They regularly sell out clubs throughout Atlantic Canada, Toronto, Hamilton and Montreal and hope to add to that list with every show. They've toured coast to coast in Canada as well as Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Plans are underway to start touring in the USA and more European countries in the coming months.
PRESS QUOTES:
"Ten out of ten! This album is hands down amazing."
Decoy Magazine, Virginia
"4/5 - A vigorously cathartic musical experience, full of wisdom and understanding. The band craft song after song of downtrodden indie rock that carries enough weight on it's shoulders to induce shin splints and stress fractures. Entirely honest, deeply moving and above all brimming with intelligence, this quartet are far from your average band. It is the lack of commercial sensibility and keen focus on honest musical expression that really makes this outing as enjoyable as it is in the end, if ever there were a perfect soundtrack to a bout of quiet retrospection on a rainy day, Canada's Wintersleep would probably be it. ”
The PRP, USA/England
