Elke week plukt Radio 1 een nieuw talent van de Poppunt-site vi.be. Deze week viel ons oor op 'Lost At Sea' van Winther. Ons oordeel:
Lost at sea echoot wat Tom Waits of Absynthe Minded, maar zonder een epigoon te zijn, Winther heeft een eigen persoonlijkheid. Je hoort dat de muzikanten al wat gewend zijn, ze spelen subtiel en to the point. Je moet de hele song beluisteren om alles gehoord te hebben, en da’s ok, niet zomaar hetzelfde refreintje nog eens herhalen, maar voortdurend aanvullen of variëren. Gitaar en viool huppelen gezwind hand in hand, elk om beurt trekken ze wat tegen, en dan spelen ze in harmonie weer verder. De tekst is eerder zwaar op de hand, maar toch is het geen neerslachtige song, omdat het ritme vrolijk hopt en zo de barre woorden enigzins compenseert. Ook de rauwe stem vindt een tegenpool in de blije piano. En da’s goed, want er zijn 2 polen nodig om spanning op te wekken.

Wekelijks selecteert Radio 1 op vi.be een talentvolle artiest of band, belt die op voor een woordje uitleg en schenkt het verkozen nummer airplay op Allez Allez, Exit en Volume 1. Deze week gaat de eer naar Winther met het nummer 'Lost At Sea'. Poppunt stuurde de band enkele vragen, die met plezier werden beantwoord.

Stel Winther eens kort voor

Winther: "We zijn met z’n vijven, allemaal jongens, en komen over het algemeen goed overeen. De liedjes die we maken zijn dromerig en romantisch maar hebben ook iets ontnuchterends, lekker vuil en cynisch. We doen, zoals de meesten mensen denk ik, ons best om een balans te zoeken. Langs de ene kant is dat mooie liedjes maken, mee helpen met de afwas, op tijd opstaan en proberen niet elke dag te drinken en langs de andere kant komt er in de avond altijd die drang om weg te gaan, gezellig dronken te worden met een mooi meisje of, net zoals 'Lost At Sea' vertelt, alle verantwoordelijkheid los te laten en te verdwalen in het onbekende."

Hoe is 'Lost At Sea' tot stand gekomen?

Winther: "Zoals alle liedjes: veel samen zitten, schrijven, schrappen en schelden tot alle hoofden in de zelfde richting staan. Het gaat over een jongen die wordt verstikt door zijn bezit en verantwoordelijkheid. Gedreven door de consequenties van zijn daden beslist hij overhaast om afscheid te nemen van zijn oude leven. Ik heb het een tijd geleden gedaan, m’n fiets genomen en vertrokken. Ik vond gewoon geen reden om te blijven. Wat even bezinnen moest zijn is 5500km fietsen door het oude Europa geworden. Uiteindelijk was het toch de eenzaamheid en een dak boven m’n hoofd die m’n idealen overwonnen. Rain on me!"

Hoe en waar is de opname gemaakt?

Winther: "Dat waren drie dagen schelden en knuffels geven in een opname studio die we hadden afgehuurd ergens achter het Museum Van Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen. Het was niet altijd makkelijk om de balans te vinden. Maar opeens is daar dan dat gitaarriddeltje, die tweede stem en dan ben je vertrokken, hé. Het was intens en vermoeiend maar elke avond hebben we toch gelukzalig afgerond met een fles wijn op een terrasje. Naar mijn idee zijn er vijf heel mooie liedjes uit gekomen, luister maar eens op onze vi.be"

Wie of wat heeft je aangezet om muziek te beginnen spelen?

Winther: "Er stond een prachtige Erard vleugelpiano in onze living: Ik bleef gewoon achter die piano zitten tot er iets degelijks uit kwam. Wat je blijft doen lukt eigenlijk bijna altijd. Dat ter frustratie van mijn broer en zussen die heel de evolutie moesten aanhoren. Voor mij is het een manier om m’n ideeën en gevoelens te verwoorden. Muziek is één van de minst opdringerige, maar meest rakende manieren van communicatie, je hoeft niet eens naar de tekst te luisteren. Het zijn sferen die je neerzet. Live spelen topt dat gevoel natuurlijk nog eens. daar zijn we pas echt vrij. Kom gerust eens kijken."

Welke zijn jouw grootste invloeden?

Winther: "Daar ben ik nooit zo bewust mee bezig geweest denk ik maar uiteraard is niemand er vrij van. Eén van mijn grootste invloeden, vrees ik, zullen toch wel de relaties met meisjes geweest zijn, ook degene die me achteraf zwaar bekomen zijn."

Wat is je muzikale ambitie?

Winther: "Het eerste concert ooit op Mars spelen... Daar hebben we eigenlijk nog niet over gesproken en ik ben er zelf ook niet helemaal uit. We repeteren gewoon zeer intens en hebben allemaal een drive die ons naar het uiterste drijft. Na een paar lekkere rums dromen we wel eens, zoals iedereen zeker? We merken het wel als we met ons hoofd tegen het plafond aanbotsen. Muziek spelen blijft sowieso het mooiste wat ik tot nu toe heb ontdekt. Wel heb ik gemerkt dat ik nogal jaloers ben op andere groepen die goed bezig zijn, dat wist ik éérst niet. Hoezeer ik dat ook onderdruk ga ik er wel van uit dat het in essentie een goede eigenschap is en een deel van m’n ambitie. Het zal wel met de jaren komen zeker?" - Poppunt

Wolfram Ghesquière is the singer songwriter who leads this Belgium band.
How did you come up with the name Winther?

Wolfram: Winther was the name my ex-girlfriend wanted to give to our first child. At the time I immediately agreed. She also told me you like people who have name starts with the same letter as your name better. Something to do with narcism I guess. We nourished the idea for a while but in the end it survived us both. We couldn’t catch up with all the drinking we had to do to keep our emotions on a same level. After we broke up I started writing songs; the story’s just kept coming and who ever said you couldn’t keep writing about love just don’t know nothing! I figured out I only had to change the characters names and now it’s me who always ends up being the woman in my own stories. ? After all it felt like we did create something together: hundreds of nights written down in her diary, hundreds of tales about gods rude way of making it at least very difficult for men and women to get along. Or was it just we? Anyway, we called the monster: Winther. And it’s true; I did like the name instantly! I think Winther means something like Army, and a kind of tree but I'll coop with winter as a final definition too


How were you discovered?

Wolfram: Are we?! I guess we are being discovered every day again…

What inspires you to write your music?

Wolfram: The idea I have that everyone is experiencing the same pain, the same fears, that we all like to make something of our lives but find it so much easier to blame someone else. And I’m not laughing with it, I seriously think it’s really hard to make all the right choices in life, to get along with most people and avoid the others. I just read there’s nobody who thinks of himself as a bad person. I know I don’t. The mistakes I’ve made have never killed me yet and the further they’re hidden in history the better the story’s become. I guess you can see it as a personal touch on destiny. I really like the idea of both sides of the sexes in a fight: both right, both terribly wrong. Story’s about a man, driven by the consequences of his deeds, cornered by a set of circumstances, forced to abandon his good old life. It’s all about real human emotions like treasury, jealousy, cheating, regret, and love, love, love.


If you travel on the road with a band or artist: who would it be and why?

Wolfram: Hard to say, guess I never really thought about it. Maybe Norah Jones, but that could be the end of us as a band. Oh, I heard Charlotte Gainsbourg has a band. Never heard her sing, thou.
What I the pleasure you get out of playing music on stage?
Wolfram: Performing good on stage and playing your songs fresh and clean is like trying to convince yourself in the mirror: “ today you’ll be a new person, you’ll quit drinking and smoking and this time you mean it.” We really love playing on stage. In fact we’re natural’s and we can keep doing it over and over without loosing anything of our reliability. Performing live is absolute freedom in a big cage filled with welcome strangers. But it’s, for me anyway, leading an audience trough different spheres which is the greatest honor. We work long and hard to get the right emotions in the right songs and if we keep playing them with our hearts, our dicks and our souls I guess it will keep working. In the end I learned what people really want to hear are other people, without the masks I mean. Which, by the way, really turned out fine because we weren’t really good at wearing them either. And it’s not so hard to show you are not the coolest guy around but it’s admitting that you really are just another idiot trying to make something of his live for a change. But it’s a great freedom too. You should try it…
