"WipeDoubt, The Gonzo Show, Lair Eon @"

The Gonzo Show take the stage around quarter to 8 and immediately their tight musicianship and laid-back on-stage demeanour generate interest amongst the assembled cosy throng. This four piece recently returned from a 3 night stint in Melbourne and one can see why there is interest down south. They combine a melodic bass-driven groove with psychedelic guitar flourishes to provide a sound all their own. Coming on like Paul Kelly fronting Pavement at times along with hints of Modest Mouse and The Cure thrown in for good measure, frontman Gonz and co. keep the peeps present nodding their collective bonces in approval. Abrasive in parts, proudly lo-fi in others, this band mixes genres interestingly to provide a solid set comprising older numbers and a few newies off their new upcoming EP. The odd slightly self-indulgent song ending aside, they bring the set to a close with the long-lost cousin of Radiohead’s Wicked Child, no small feat. A band to watch.

There is then a small break before WipeDoubt appear on-stage, a trio comprising two young guitar-wielding men and one sharp lady drummer. They begin like a cross between the Black Keys and Neil Young before belying their youth with a firm grasp of pop sensibilities further into the set. Pedal-driven guitar squelching moves into wail territory as frontman Joel Smith channels Jeff Buckley with some impressively soaring vocals. They thoroughly captivate the Sunday Ric’s crowd throughout the set and even introduce a new guitar named after Drones hero Gareth Liddiard for his first stage appearance. It would be interesting to hear them with slightly sparser drum arrangements in parts and the addition of bass may help heighten the intensity of some of the more epic numbers however it’s absence was not over-bearing. All in all a promising young Brisbane band with a knack for mixing styles which should see their sound grow into something quite impressive further down the line.

Bio

"Wipedoubt, a young band from Brisbane, Australia, have been playing together since June of 2008. They consist of Joel Smith - Vox/Guitar, Al Mosis - Guitar, Tom Uhlhorn – Bass, Backing Vox, and Louise Pomroy - Drums. Since their first gig at Ric's Bar in October 2008 less than a year ago, they have been playing regularly, amassing over 30 shows in which time they have graced the stage at Local Brisbane venues such as: Globe Theatre, Ric's, QUT Guild Bar, Red Room/2nd Degree, Jubilee Hotel, Miami Shark Bar and The Zoo. After this massive start to their career, Wipedoubt have been turning heads throughout 2009, always having a string of upcoming gigs in Brisbane and the greater South East Qld region coming up.

Their music is best summed up with a few words. Melodic, Experimental, Powerful but most of all: Original. Questions as to what they sound like is still ones they struggle to answer. But there are underlying influences From Grunge to Country and bands/artists like Something For Kate, Sonic Youth, Jeff Buckley, The Drones and Kings of Leon among others. This diverse range of influences has allowed them to play with a variety of artists. Wipedoubt’s diverse and rich catalogue of songs allows them to direct and change their shows at will, displaying a supreme control over their sound and a desire to perform.

Early 2009 saw Wipedoubt earn their first review on a Summery Sunday night at Ric's..
