"Without Will Coming"

‘Without
Will’
coming
By DANIELLE VANDENBRINK
Staff Writer
Montreal pop-punk band
Without Will will be playing at the
Pembroke waterfront on July 25
and August 1.
Lead vocalist and bassist Paul
Woods Lafleur, whose mother
lives in Pembroke, said the band’s
sound is influenced by punk bands
NoFx and the Ramones.
Besides Mr.Lafleur,the other members
are Robert Bowe on lead guitar,
Jonathan Erskine on drums and
Robin Greenhough, rhythm guitarist.
The band has been together for
more than a year, and this summer
will be their first time touring outside
of Montreal.
The band played at the waterfront
earlier this month, and is
looking for more people to come
out and watch them play.
“It’s a fairly energetic live performance,
a lot of jumping around
and stuff like that,” he said.
He said the feedback from their
Montreal performances has been
positive.
“Our songs cover a wide range
of topics from a sardonic view of
relationships, to the more serious
issue of corporate subservience,”
Mr. Lafleur said.
He said that Without Will’s mission
is to promote political consciousness
through their music while “trying not
to take ourselves too seriously.”
“In a sense we are anti-industry
because we are opposed to all aesthetically
manufactured groups
who perform a generic bland style
of punk as dictated by the corporate
giants,” he added.
“We are not concerned with
over complicated guitar solos and
complexified song structure, but
focus on writing melodies that are
appealing to the masses.”
Without Will also plans on doing
a maritime tour in late August.

Bio

In it’s infancy one could say that Without Will began as a hardcore rap group from Hudson QC. Paul Woods Lafleur and Robert Bowe began their musical career dropping intricate stanzas overtop of established instrumentals. Diverging musical tastes however, caused Bowe to pick up a guitar and part ways with the group leaving Lafleur to continue on the hip-hop path until 2005. At this point Lafleur realized that although hip-hop was in his soul, his heart was truly that of a punk rocker and he began composing melodies reminiscent of the early days of Face to Face and Millencolin. In 2007 Lafleur joined a Ramones cover band in Montreal alongside then 17 year old drummer Jonathan Erskine. The group obtained a regular spot playing at O’Regan’s pub in Montreal on Tuesday nights. The band eventually adopted the name Without Will after bassist Wilfredo Figueroa left the group to pursue other interests. As Without Will began composing original songs it was decided that a strong guitar lead was lacking to fill out the sound. As luck would have it longtime friend of Lafleur’s, Rob Bowe came into contact with the singer and announced his return to Montreal after a 2 year absence. Erskine and Lafleur both agreed that Bowe should assume the role of lead guitar player in Without Will. Shortly after in the early months of 2008 the need for a new rhythm guitar player arose which prompted the trio to seek the services of ex- Judgmental guitarist Robin Greenhough originally from Montreal, who had been on a 9 month hiatus in Victoria BC. An Immediate Chemistry was born as Without Will took flight.

Without Will has since released a street demo selling over 200 copies. The group is currently in the process of preparing a 6 track EP for commercial release due out in the summer of 2009. Without Will’s music draws on influences from the Beach Boys to NoFx in a high energy melodic style punk rock eclectic. The topic of their songs range from political satire to a sardonic approach to relationships and materialism.

The band’s singles What Does It Matter and Occupational Bliss will be hitting radio in early 2009. Without Will is also preparing a Quebec tour, where they will be playing Montreal and surrounding areas in August 2009, dates TBA on the websites.
