"The sweet sounds of Canada DayDay"

Kathryn Dunmore, Backbeat
Jun 30, 2006

Spencer Smith Park is coming alive with the sound of music and laughter once again this weekend to celebrate Canada Day.

Tomorrow (Saturday), activities and entertainment will flood the downtown park in a modernization of the old-fashioned family-themed picnics, as the City of Burlington celebrates Canada Day.

"Where else can you sit in a beautiful park, look at the lake, enjoy family entertainment and not pay for anything?" said Sue Irmisch-Brown, director of entertainment for the event. "The last couple of years we've had over 75,000 people each year. It's just a great family day where you can hear wonderful music and enjoy free food."

Free lunch items will be offered and visitors will have the option of bringing their own food or buying from the food vendors.

"All of the entertainment is Burlington-based," added Irmisch-Brown. "We have so much wonderful talent in this city, why go farther for it?"

Irmisch-Brown has been a talent agent for 25 years and has aimed to have a variety of entertainment and material appropriate for all ages at this celebration.

Performing for the third time at this event will be Wizened Old Men, a popular Burlington band known for its renditions of classic rock and roll songs.

"Burlington is making its mark in the music industry and this is a great venue to hear some great performers," said Chris Walker, rhythm guitarist and vocalist. "Our primary reason for doing this is because it's fun and a terrific opportunity."

Formed in 2002, Wizened Old Men brings together six Burlington natives (all Central High School graduates) with a combined music experience of more than 200 years.

Along with Walker are Johnny Quinn as drummer and vocalist, Brad Bryant as keyboardist and vocalist, Kim Boydell as bass guitarist, Phil Ronald as lead and 12-string guitarist and Marty Fairbairn as lead vocalist.

"The Canada Day celebration really is a party atmosphere, particularly later in the day," explained Walker. "Our music is well-known classic '60s rock and roll that can be enjoyed by all age groups.

"As we've performed in multiple venues with differing audiences, we have really found that the enjoyment of classic rock and roll is universal. Everyone loves it. To keep the music fresh, on a year-to-year basis we have changed over 80 per cent of our material without leaving the heart and soul of the '60s. We love to play." - Burlington Post

"Old Men Still Like to Rock It"

Old men still like to rock it

One thing you learn from the Wizened Old Men is that watching them perform is an experience unto itself.

These six music veterans grew up together in Burlington, attending Central High School back in the '60s. Their love of music stems from the old rock favourites found in that time and, today, the sextet performs them with passion.

Wizened Old Men consists of Chris Walker, vocalist and guitarist, John Quinn, vocalist and drummer, Phil Ronald, lead guitarist, Kim Boydell, bass guitarist, Marty Fairbarn, rhythm guitarist/vocalist and Brad Bryant, keyboardist.

With 203 years of combined music experience, Wizened Old Men put on a show that will get any audience moving.

The group of friends stayed in occasional contact throughout the years after high school, but always wanted to see more of each other. At each infrequent gathering, they would all suggest getting together to jam one day.

"When we once again made that suggestion, my wife said she has been listening to us say that for 25 years and we should just get together and do it," said Ronald.

In 1997, the group finally came together and began playing in Walker's basement about every six weeks.

"Everybody would get together to play, sing or do whatever they wanted to do," explained Walker. "Those jam nights progressed to where we wanted to play together more often. Last year, the core six of us formed this band."

From there, they have played many private functions and public bars. On March 27, Wizened Old Men will perform at Coronation.

The band's set list includes great hits from such acts as the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Rivers, Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley.

"Music is a commonality," noted Walker. "It is truly a universal language. In my experience, it's a common bond, certainly among us with our diverse backgrounds and also our children."

Their love of old rock and roll is apparent when each gets into the music he performs. "This is the music we grew up with," said Boydell. "And it is fun to play."

With careers and families filling their lives, the members of Wizened Old Men perform to have fun and perhaps raise money for charities if asked.

"We used to get 30 to 40 people coming to our jam nights," recalled Walker, adding they had to stop because it became too crowded. "Now, all we are doing is formalizing that and moving it out to the public." - Burlington Post (2004)

"Money Well Spent"

Chris Walker and his band Wizened Old Men have played at The Shilling and Stout on a regular basis for three years. Chris and his band always show up well prepared and ready to give it their all. This band always draws a nice crowd which speaks volumes for their professionalism. We heard nothing but positive feed back from our regulars. Wizened Old Men is money well spent for any venue or function.

I would like to let you know that the Rock n Roll Group performing under the name Wizened Old Men do a great job, this letter can only explain a little of what you will hear, but the best way to find our for yourself is to hire Wizened Old Men for your next Gig.

I have hired Wizened Old Men at many of my own functions and I must say that I have always received great feedback from my guests.

I have also sung some back-up vocals with Wizened Old Men and we have had a great time on stage. The 6v members that perform are all veterans in teh music industry, and have accomplished a great following too. Always being called back on stage for an Encore.

I would highly recommend Wizened Old Men at your next function, and keep in mind they're a Local Band out of Burlington, Ontario.

History of the Wizened Old Men

Wizened Old Men was formed in 2002. Collectively, we have over 200 years of combined music experience. All members are Burlington natives and Central High School graduates. Some of us have University Educations, heck we even have our own Doctor!

Starting off with a few private parties, we rapidly took on the challenges of local night spots like the Carrigan Arms and the Coronation and the Shilling and Stout. We have performed at the Burlington Sound Of Music Festival and for the City of Burlington Canada Day Festivities at Spencer Smith Park as well as fundraisers with Rock N Ray Michaels and CKOC.

We currently perform regularly at both The Boston Manor and Jerseys
Band Members

Chris Walker, Rhythm Guitar and Vocals. Leader of the band, Chris has been playing guitar for over 35 years. He also plays acoustic folk music and is a excellent rhythm Guitar player. Chris also contributes lead and harmony vocal parts.

Johnny Quinn, Drums and Vocals. Johnny still holds the record for number of years as an active member of the Burlington Teen tour Band. He followed that up with stints in various bands in and around the area as well as the Top Hat Marching Band. John is a very talented drummer and provides us with a rich full accurate rhythm.

Brad Bryant, Keyboard and Vocals. Known as the quiet one, Brad is Chris' cousin and is a true genius on keyboards. Classically trained, his talents are one of the great assets of the band.

Kim Boydell, Bass. Original member of the Marshmallow Jungle back in the '60s. Brought out of hiding from Ottawa (although originally from Burlington), Kim keeps the bottom end moving with ever increasing skills.

Phil Ronald, Lead and Twelve String Guitar. Phil has been playing guitar for over 40 years. Also an original member of the Marshmallow Jungle back in the '60s, Phil continues to drive great rock and roll. sounds.

Dr. Marty Fairbairn, Lead Vocals. Rounding out our compliment, is long time Vocalist Dr. Marty Fairbairn. Marty has developed into a superb vocalist with the band with excellent dynamics, terrific range and a keen ear. Marty also develops all of the harmonies for the band.
