Wooden Legs

Wooden Legs is an Italian Folk-Celitic music band with marked Prog influences. Their style differs from the classic groups of their kind, with tempo changes and a solid rhythmic session close to Rock. In 2020 they released “Animali,” new album that shows a mature sound and confirms the great qualities of the band. Both in the instrumental and in the sung parts, the individual technique comes out with pleasant melodies and constant rhythm changes. As said, they approach the Folk Prog sounds, recalling the style of groups such as The Strawbs and Clannad. Obviously the matrix of Folk-Celtic music is predominant, but as stated by the band itself in a pleasant chat “we have a lot of Prog influences.” It specifies the mixture between modern and traditional, where the typical sounds of the genre intersect with the new ones creating a unique mix. The vocal is solid and harmonious and the atmospheres created by the instruments bring us straight to Ireland. The sudden changes in tempo and the construction of the tracks, never banal, are an added value for albums to listen to and listen to again given the amount of ideas inside. Recommended listening for all lovers of traditional Irish sounds, but also for Prog listeners. The sound quality and technique of the artists involved make this record one of the best plays of the genre of the last few years, smooth and very pleasant, mature and original. - Prog rock journal

Quintetto tutto italiano che percorre il sentiero dei suoni e delle tematiche musicali dell’area celtica, con questo bel “Che cosa state cercando?” i triestini Woodenlegs propongono il loro secondo disco che segue “If it doesn’t last forever” del 2011. Quello che colpisce dall’ascolto è la qualità del suono, compatto, equilibrato e allo stesso tempo grintoso; musica che travarica i confini degli stereotipi della musica irlandese, inutile mettersi ad inseguire i più famosi ed inarrivabili interpreti e le più celebri melodie, meglio cercare una personale via che dia la possibilità di farsi apprezzare senza avere il peso di essere avvicinati a questo o a quel gruppo irlandese. Questa la cifra stilistica dei Woodenlegs, ed in più la voglia di mettersi in gioco componendo brani originali, lasciando forse intravedere il loro futuro musicale. Come le due tracce che chiudono il disco, “Dancing in the mud” e “Gronte”, o lo strumentale “A light in the night” con il suono che guarda ai Waterboys – che gruppo di musica tradizionale irlandese proprio non sono -: coraggioso anche sfidare standards come “Kid on the mountain” con originale arrangiamento quasi folk rock e “Follow me up to Carlow”. Insomma un bel disco, scritto e suonato da Alice Porro (flauti), Giovanni Gregoretti (basso e mandolino), Anselmo Luisi (percussioni, voce), Giovanni Settimo (chitarra e voce solista) e Andrea Monterosso (violino e voce) che sono sicuro sarà apprezzato anche al di là del Mare d’Irlanda. Triestini, ma con l'anima irlandese, i cinque componenti dei Wooden Legs, band formatasi nel 2008, e che si è fatta le ossa calcando i palchi di numerosi festival dedicati alla musica celtica e folk, sia in Italia che in Europa. Un legame fra il brullo Carso e la verdeggiante Irlanda che evidentemente trae ispirazione fin da James Joyce e che i Wooden Legs rinverdiscono con la loro passione per il folk celtico. “What Are You Looking For?” è il loro secondo lavoro, il debutto era avvenuto nel 2011, e fin dal titolo rappresenta un invito a lasciarsi trascinare dall'energia della musica. I componenti della band, tutti provenienti da studi al conservatorio, fanno valere l'ottima preparazione tecnica e riescono a comunicare a chi ascolta tutta la trascinante passione che li anima. Gli strumenti della tradizione celtica ci sono tutti: chitarra, violino, il flauto anche nella versione popolare irlandese di tin whistle e low whistle, il bddhran, ma ci sono anche il mandolino, percussioni provenienti dalla tradizione africana come lo djambé che contribuiscono ad arricchire la gamma sonora.

In questo album tutto sembra funzionare per bene, sia negli strumentali che nei brani cantati, suggestivo l'uso dei cori e l'alternarsi di voci soliste dal timbro diverso, fra gli strumenti un ruolo peculiare appartiene al violino e al flauto che colorano di fiabesco e, a volte, di una sottile vena nostalgica la musica. Musica fondamentalmente conviviale e festaiola, che sprigiona energia vitale e contagiosa, che abbiate o meno gambe di legno vi riuscirà impossibile tenerle ferme e vi troverete inevitabilmente a battere il tempo, se non a ballare. Musica che sa di birra, balli agresti, spirito anarcoide e ribelle, senso conumitario, di tutto l'immaginario irlandese che cinema, musica, letteratura hanno contribuito a costruire. Esprimono bene il senso della loro musica le parole del coro di Helmet on the Ground, composta dalla flautista Alice Porro: «We sang in towns mountains and jails / we arrived by bus, car or by cart / We palyed as much as you have the nails / maybe I can say this was an art.». - Distorsioni.net

Sie wollen auch Menschen mit Holzbein zum Tanzen bringen. Das könnte gelingen: die Fünf aus Triest spielen beschwingt und leicht, wie es zu ihrer Heimat passt, und strahlen viel Spielfreude aus. Aber so ganz mögen sie sich nicht für die akustische Seite entscheiden. Manchmal wechseln sie von Percussion und Kontrabass zu Schlagzeug und E-Bass.

Ich weiß nicht ob die Wooden Legs realisieren, dass sie mindestens so italienisch wie irisch klingen. Ihr Markenzeichen ist das Gespann von rasant gespielter Geige und Querflöte. Die beiden Melodieträger haben offenbar klassische Vorbildung und sind sehr gut aufeinander eingestellt.

Der Opener Helmet on the Ground beginnt mit einer Art Gesangsvereins-Motiv etwas glatt und gefällig. Follow Me Up To Carlow, vom Sänger mit der angemessenen Grimmigkeit und prägnanter Gitarre vorgetragen, lässt die Stimmung ernster werden, ebenso 1000 Guns for 1000 Men. Das Material ist überwiegend nach traditionellen Vorbildern selbst geschrieben und enthält gut die Hälfte Instrumentalstücke. Beim Dancing in the Mud (aus der Perspektive eines Schweins) zeigt die Band Humor. Step it out Mary fügt den zahlreichen Fassungen eine weitere hinzu. Das eigene Village Fair mit Wechselgesang ist da überzeugender. Geige und Flöte lieben Wendungen und Breaks. Die Instrumentaltitel brauchen manchmal ein paar Minuten, bevor sie mit hohem Tempo ihre Power entfalten. Die Zusammenstellung der Titel auf diesem, dem 2. Album, wirkt etwas sprunghaft, so als ob man noch nicht ganz die eigene Linie gefunden hätte. Die Band hat viel Potential für die akustische, aber auch für die rockigere Seite. - Celtic-rock.de
