"O2 Academy London Gig Review"

The 28th of September at the O2 Academy 2 in London the Breakout Festival Showcase rocked the night, and some interesting bands took the stage to show the new face of music.
Things started to heat up when Bridgebound presented their american-style rock, with persistent electric guitars and influences that went from Alter Bridge to Radiohead. Too bad the lead singer struggled to hit high notes, but the ballad they played was soulful.

Reign Broke Better had a strong presence on stage thanks to their Gwen Stefani sound-alike lead vocalist and a good chemistry between each of the four members. They managed to rock the house with their eclectic genre, blending rock and funk and ska with swaggering bass lines, inspired guitar riffs and an impressive savoir-faire.
Deservingly the runner up of the night, and definitely to check them out in the future.

The Lunar Pilots captured the attention of the audience with their acoustic and melodic rock. A distinctive and rather sophisticated sound with a 70s vibe that made the audience crave for more.

Fragments of Faith were definitely the heaviest band of the night and hell broke loose as soon as the thumping beat of the opening track merged into massive guitar work, thrashy riffs and killer bass lines. Pounding drums never failed to impress and the voice of the female lead vocalist was the icing on the cake. A clear, malleable and never-out-of-tune voice that remained absolutely crystal even when screaming at the top of her lungs. They were loud and rock and they deserved to be the winners of the night. Off to bigger stages…

Words of Purvis closed the night with their solid rock, featuring crunchy riffing and a touch of surf inspired melodies. Talented musicians who could very well be the next best thing.

"Annual Halloween Scream Event with Words of Purvis"

At the artsclub Halloween is always a scream, but not in the usual fright night sense of Gothzilla costumes and cod-American trick ’n’ treats. We’ve got Halloween Scream V on Saturday 31st and what’s great about this particular blockbuster sequel is that they just keep getting better.
Okay, so maybe I would say that, but we believe in our screamfests because a lot of planning goes into it and a lot of good comes out of it, as there’s always a beneficiary. This year it’s in aid of Cancer Research UK and it’s sponsored by the world-famous Gibson (which means there’ll be an amazing guitar to be won in the raffle!)
But what you’ll really want to know is that there are also three live bands, ace DJs and the fancy dress theme is… Ancient Rome. Yes, whether it’s vestal virgins or Gods, gladiators or Huns, Asterix or Obelix, Cleopatra-style Egyptian glamour or Animal House-style toga partying you’ve got in mind, you won’t have to look like The Horrors here.
Mind you, there are Monsters In The Attic on stage, alongside the mighty fine Words of Purvis and Dorian Grey. Words of Purvis have performed at every Halloween Scream and both Monsters In The Attic and Dorian Grey have each played at Halloween Screams too, which makes it a best-of band line-up for the fifth birthday party. And former Libertines drummer Gary Powell (so much of an artsclub regular that his new band includes our bar staff!) joins DJs Steve Biggs and The Magnificent Leon choosing the tunes.

Craig Sciba, guitar player and singer with Words of Purvis, co-hosts the party. ‘We always love playing Halloween because there are such great people that come,’ he says. ‘We’ve run it for five years and I’m pleased to announce that Merlin Studios, part of the Merlin Entertainments Group, will be donating prizes related to Madame Tussauds, the London Eye and Legoland for the raffle and fancy dress prizes.’
Halloween Scream has previously been given the top spot in The Times round-up of Halloween parties nationally, and it sells out every time. So it’s best to get advance tickets via the club or www.bigwheeltickets.com and avoid those queues around the block. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

:: Halloween Scream V, Sat 31.10 // 6pm-2am , £10 (in aid of Cancer Research UK)
live: Stone Halo, Monsters in The Attic, Words of Purvis
decks: Gary Powell, Steve Biggs, The Magnificent Leon

"Halloween Scream V"

Weirdly enough, Halloween Scream have gone for a Roman themed soirée to celebrate their fifth anniversary (in aid of Cancer Research UK), with DJs Gary Powell (Libertines) Steve Biggs (Ibiza Resident DJ, Subliminal Radio, World Disco) and The Magnificent Leon spinning rock and indie via electro and house classics around live bands Dorian Grey + Monsters In The Attic + Words of Purvis and all you sexy gladiator types. - Time Out

Bio

Words of Purvis are a 4 piece rock band from London England. The members consist of Craig Sciba: Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar, Simon Opie: Lead Guitar, Greg Opie: Bass Guitar and Francois Rocquemont: Drums. All members of the band sing backing vocals and contribute to the song-writing. In 2008 The Times commented on the band with the following statement: "Take some good honest rock and roll, throw in a Foo Fighter vibe, one dash of surf rock, mix it all up with a dark Razorlight twist, and what you have is an amazing musical cocktail called Words of Purvis" These 4 London based lads take the stage with determination, love what they do, and deliver a solid performance. With catchy vocal hooks and cool riffs, these guys make it fun to be that crazy mad person in the crowd. After all, jumping around and enjoying yourself is what live music is all about! Over the past 3 years Words of Purvis have started to emerge as a dynamic solid addition to the current everchanging music scene. The band benefited from a successful start with the help of well known sponsors and positive press coverage of their live performances. They have performed every year (both support and headlining slots) at the NAC Annual Halloween Scream Charity Bash sponsored by Gibson/Epiphone in aid of the NSPCC & Nordoff-Robbins Music Charity. In 2007 Halloween Scream joined forces with ex music industry mogul Alan Mcgee's (Oasis, Primal Scream) International Club Night Death Disco. This event has also been voted critics choice by the Times as the #1 Halloween event in the UK with Words of Purvis becoming the resident band for the annual event. In late 2010 the band were finalists at the MTV World Stage Maldives Breakout Festival held at the O2 Academy Islington. That same year Words of Purvis released their Metway Sessions EP. The album contained several new tracks and was distributed on www.bandcamp.com as a free preliminary distribution promotion before being released on Itunes. In February 2012 Words of Purvis will return to Metway Studios in Brighton England. A collaborative mix of several recording sessions will be released in 2012.
