"LIVE from SAC"

The “LIVE from SAC” program continues with the return of Yacouba Sissoko along with the world funk band LUMA, together forming a music collective performing traditional music of Mali as well as music rooted in the funk and groove tradition. This collaboration came to life in 2014 and they have performed together with great success, constantly evolving their eclectic musical vocabulary. The concert will be a unique experience and an opportunity for the local community to hear authentic Malian music, storytelling, and funky grooves.

Performing will be: Yacouba Sissoko – Kora / Dan Lauter – Sax /
Jeff Marshall – Bass /Claes Brondal – Drums and vocalist Natu Camara.

Yacouba is in demand as one of the best Kora players in the world, performing with jazz, Latin and R&B bands, as well as traditional African songs. In addition to performing as a soloist and with his band SIYA, he has toured with a variety of well-known artists including Regina Carter, Baaba Maal, Rachel Brown, Kavita Shah, Kakande, and Roberto Fonseca. Yacouba has also recorded with Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, Abdoulaye Diabate, and Ami Koita.

LUMA, which stands for Life, Unity, Music, Amplified had much success in the Hamptons from 2003- 2007, playing at high profile events like James Beard Chef and Champagne, The Hampton Classic, Pacific East Restaurant, numerous private parties, and then carried continued with appearances in NYC where they won a Starbuck sponsored best original band contest in the village, competing against rock bands. They performed at the Blue Note and Summer Stage, and one of their recorded singles, “Ever So Slow”, was picked up for an XM Radio summer ad campaign.

The concert will be recorded live for The Jam Session Radio Hour to be aired on local NPR affiliate WPPB 88.3 FM.

About The Jam Session:
The Jam Session is based on the art of improvising with Jazz as the primary foundation, with other styles and influences present as well. TJS is continuously trying to promote and encourage musicians and audience members from the global community to participate, creating an eclectic mix of music and culture. Inspired by the late night jam sessions and loft rehearsals in New York City, TJS believes that the evolution and survival of improvisational music takes place in front of a live audience, being inclusive and accessible to all who want to engage. Frequent local home for The Jam Session is Bay Burger in Sag Harbor.

World Music Collective performs and educates awesome music from Mali, Senegal, United States and beyond. Each show is like a hugely fun master class of musical appreciation from rhythm to melody to call and response and improv! Is great for all ages! The African Kora is the focal point, fused with singing, storytelling and danceable rhythms.  

World Music Collective features Yacouba Sissoko. Yacouba, from Mali, is in demand as one of the best kora players in the world!  Fronting WMC with Yacouba is Natu Camara, a Guinean singer, dancer and songwriter who, herself fronted an all female hip hop group previously!  Contributing talents from the West are Daniel Lauter, a multi-instrumentalist and composer, playing saxophones, didjeridu, and other world wind instruments; Claes Brondal, drummer and percussionist who easily moves between funk, soul, jazz, Afro/Cuban and Brazilian styles; and Stan Wright a super bassist and guitarist versed in jazz, funk, R&B and Motown.  WMC also brings in guest artists, including traditional cultural dancers!
