"Indie Spotlight: Wrongchilde"

Gold Blooded, the highly anticipated album from the hopelessly romantic yet slightly askew Wrongchilde (Mat Devine of Kill Hannah), was just released yesterday, September 16. Hot off the presses, the album is entirely crowd funded from PledgeMusic and from the acoustic sounds of “Falling In Love Will Kill You,” to the retro synth sounds of “Dance To Your Heartbeat,” Gold Blooded is a step forward for the singer/songwriter. He keeps the music firmly rooted in rock, but with a wild nod to nostalgic pop his use of synths and electronica promise new music for a new generation. The album features guest appearances by greats such as Morgan Kibby of M83 and White Sea, as well as guitarist and songwriter, Alain Whyte of Morrissey, and Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance on the single. Wrongchilde has gained attention from outlets like Fuse, MTV, AV Club, Ryan Seacrest, Alternative Press, Buzzfeed, Bop + Tigerbeat and OUT Magazine, all of which eagerly awaited the new album, not to mention hype from taste-makers in the blogosphere, like The Burning Ear. - BMI

"Exclusive Premiere: Watch Wrongchilde (Kill Hannah's Mat Devine) in Creepy 'Slow' Video"

You might know Mat Devine as the lead singer of Kill Hannah, or perhaps from his grade A job of live tweeting the 2014 VMAs for Billboard. But now his attention is on a brand new solo project called Wrongchilde, and Billboard has the exclusive premiere of the music video for his creepy, minimal track “Slow.”

After six full-length albums with rockers Kill Hannah, Devine decided he needed to return to his songwriting roots and take a break from the “bureaucracy of the music industry.” So he set out writing dark, romantic songs for the debut album Gold Blooded (out Sept. 16), which was funded entirely through a PledgeMusic campaign.

First came the lead single "Falling In Love Will Kill You,” featuring Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance (and now solo) fame. For “Slow,” Devine and director Niko Sonnberger sought to craft a video twisted enough to match a song with lines like, “Sometimes I feel like a deer hit on the road and left to die slow.”

Gerard Way Forgets My Chemical Romance, Goes Full '80s in New 'No Shows' Video

In the video, Devine wanders the streets of Los Angeles and encounters a massive pillow fight, all while hiding behind the creepiest mask he could get his hands on.

"I pissed off the entire staff at Hollywood Costume, trying on every one, sending pictures of each to Niko,” the singer-songwriter tells Billboard. “This mask was all alone, kind of gross, possibly used, out of it’s packaging, tucked behind a rack. The minute I tried it on, we were like, ‘That’s the one. It’s only 11 a.m. and it's scaring the crap out of me.’” - Billboard

"Watch This Synth-Heavy Cover Of ‘Love Is A Battlefield’ Featuring Child Ninjas. Now"

Wrongchilde’s cover of Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield” is the weirdest cover to ever cover — in a good way.

Wrongchilde — a new project from Kill Hannah’s Mat Devine — teamed up with Morgan Kibby (M83, White Sea) for this gloriously synth-y track/video, which sees Devine being stalked by a gang of pint-sized ninjas looking for blood. Because love, it’s a battlefield — get it?

The only thing weirder than that concept is what happens at the end of the video. Watch now, we beg of you, and check out the band’s debut record, Gold Blooded, come August. - MTV

Bio

Wrongchilde is a dark pop band based in Los Angeles.

Formed in 2013 when singer/songwriter (ex-Kill Hannah frontman), Mat Devine, moved west from NYC, Wrongchilde launched a successful PledgeMusic campaign to self-release their debut album, Gold Blooded

Hopelessly romantic and just a touch emotionally twisted, like a John Hughes soundtrack, Gold Blooded is nod to nostalgic pop, creating a collection of anthemic tunes fitting for a new generation. Inspired equally by early 90's UK shoegaze bands and the golden era of 4AD Records, Wrongchilde's songs have a reverence for atmosphere balanced with the right amount of teeth.

The album features collaborations with Morgan Kibby (M83/White Sea)Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), and Alain Whyte (Morrissey).

From the acoustic sounds of, "Falling In Love (Will Kill You)," to the throwback synths of, "Dance To Your Heartbeat," Gold Blooded is a progressive step forward for the singer/songwriter.

Reflecting upon the independent creative process, Devine said:

"It's given me an incredible amount of freedom. Artistically, it was cool for me to take a departure away from the bureaucracy of the music industry. To write songs for the reasons that I initially fell in love with songwriting in my dorm room as a kid, to disregard pressures and say the things I would say if I knew this was my last day on earth."

Wrongchilde is rounded out with synth player Camille Driscoll (Young Love, Bathroom Murders), guitarist Neil Popkin (War Tapes and Dreamland), drummer Aaron Miller (Assassins), and bassist Jeffrey David Harvey.
