"Wussy Galore"

http://www.citybeat.com/2005-09-14/music.shtml - cincinnati CityBeat

"Wussy hardly seems wimpy: Ass Ponys' Chuck Cleaver loves both his bands equally"

I don't care what you say, as long as you don't say we're an Ass Ponys side project," Cleaver says, handing the phone to Miller.

"Locals Only: Wussy"

...the amorphous, acoustic-based Wussy sound...could be described as slightly organic, ethereal and melancholic, but as moving as a phone call from a long-dead relative.

"Cincinnati Gets the 'Point"

(excerpt)
People make last minute plans for who to see tonight. Spiff, wussy, MINK and the X-Rated Cowboys (from Columbus) are high on many lists.

At Moose On Main, Dayton's Rhonda Everitt showed off a voice sweet enough to rival wussy's Lisa Miller's -- she can also hit you with one of her crutches if you think she doesn't. Next, it was down to the Courtyard Cafe for wussy. The Courtyard was packed with many local musicians, such as Dave Purcell, Abiyah and MPMF co-founders Sean Rhiney and Bill Donabedian, plus Cincinnati City Council members John Cranley and Jim Tarbell. Wussy rocked out in fine style with their electric Folk/Rock/Velvet Underground (by way of Emmylou Harris) style.

"Be sure to hit the high points"

(excerpt)

With 200 acts spread over 15 stages, MidPoint Music Festival is a whole lot of rock, R&B, Americana, hip-hop and dance music.

But every showcase has its "buzz bands," the acts that people are already talking about. These groups are the ones most likely to draw more than their share of industry attention.

Wussy: Featuring one of the Tristate's most respected and individualistic songwriters, Chuck Cleaver of the Ass Ponys, this all-star alt-folk-punk group includes Messerly & Ewing's Mark Messerly, singer Lisa Miller and percussionist Dawn Burman (11 p.m.; Courtyard Cafe).

Bio

Springing forth from the hinterlands of Cincinnati, OH are Wussy, an American five-piece fronted by songwriters Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker and backed by Mark Messerly, Joe Klug and John Erhardt. Bridging the gap between The Band and Sonic Youth, Wussy continue in the tradition of bands with multiple writers and singers. Cleaver and Walker offer radically different perspectives, both lyrically and vocally, that blend in seamless fashion usually blanketed inside layers of noise. The band typically plays loud rock and roll heavily influenced by late 60s pop and psychedelica, as well as seminal 70s songwriters from John Cale to John Prine.

They formed in 2001 as a result of an impromptu performance, and even now are known among the press and their cult following for their spirited, off-the-cuff live shows. While more mainstream success remains elusive, Wussy are a true critics band racking up multiple plaudits from Rolling Stone, NPR, BBC, New York Times, Spin, Washington Post, Magnet, The Guardian, Village Voice, Uncut and many more.

Wussy have toured the US and UK extensively, including several festival appearances (SXSW, Nelsonville, CMJ, Midpoint, Bunbury, Twangfest) and live sessions for BBC6 Radio, KEXP (Seattle), KDHX (St. Louis) and KUT (Austin). They also offered recent support for several tours including for fellow Ohioans Afghan Whigs and Heartless Bastards as well as one-off shows with Yo La Tengo, The Breeders, Best Coast, Mudhoney, Shonen Knife, Okkervil River, The Mekons, COME, Wreckless Eric, and K Records founder Calvin Johnson.

Their fifth full-lenth is Attica! Out May 6 in the US on Shake It Records and May 5 in the UK on Damnably.
