Biography

CAPTAIN SMASH and the Shady Stash

Introducing Captain Smash and the Shady Stash, the Melbourne based funk n’ soul outfit led by vocalist and creator, Sacha Pollard (aka Captain Smash). Their raw and quirky sound is a fusion of the bands extensive musical training and a love of everything with 'cheese', drawing inspiration from pop, r n' b, gospel and soul. Captain Smash and the Shady Stash are set to release their much anticipated debut EP entitled, Turbo Fromagio.

Formed in 2006 as an outlet for experimentation and appreciation of each others music, the members of the Shady Stash have played alongside some big acts including Alice Russell, Rene Geyer and The Bamboos to name a few. Front woman, Sacha Pollard’s sublime and soulful voice acts as an instrument in itself… Growing up in a musical family certainly nourished this talent, her father being a composer and her mother a piano teacher and music therapist.

The band consists of Nic Lam (Guitar), Yuri Pavlinov (Bass) Sacha Pollard (Vocals), Luke Collins (Drums), Shannon Barnett, Alistair Parsons and Emily Mould (Trombone), Ainslie Wills, Nina Benvenutti, Zoe Kalenderidis, Joanna Lavell and Mezz Coleman (Backing Vocals). They have a rather unusual horn section consisting of three trombones, which give texture and drive to the bands insatiable soul grooves, overlaid by funky guitar licks and rhythmic harmonies, a delectable fusion of sound is created.

Captain Smash and the Shady Stash received a ‘Buzz Grant’ from The Foundation for Young Australians to complete their debut EP, Turbo Fromagio. The EP was a good twelve months in the making and was recorded at the “House of Chunk” by Jarrad Brown (bass player for The Custom Kings). The recording was all done in Brown’s bedroom with a gospel choir which included some interesting characters, two of them being Pollard’s parents! The EP exhibits the bands many talents and encapsulates the smooth soul inspired sound they convey at their live shows.

HA HA HA-CAPTAIN SMASH

(Lyrics in bold include backing vocals)

CHORUS

I’ve been….
Waitin’ and watchin’ and a sittin’ and a talkin’
To the people that been walkin to the sound of our groove (sound of our groove)
Critisising analysing’ talkin’ ‘bout the music
That they’re movin’ and groovin’ and dancin’ to.
The people who are here didn’t come to grieve
They’re not here for you
And they’re not here for me
Don’t be afraid to let it loose and lose a little time
Comfort me baby, I’m no longer blind.

VERSE 1

Am I the only one who can see
There’s something wrong with the you treat me
Thought I might opt for out,
Ha ha In your face, ha ha!
But I thought seein’ this is mine
I’d make history in my own sweet time
Though I might still spend a little time with you
I got bigger better things to do!
I was startin’ to lose love for what I did
You guys not supportin’ me in anything I did
don’t you see you beat me to the ground
but now I’ve got incentive to make my own sound!
Found the ones who are gonna see me through
Found the ones that shit all over you
Yeah I’m about to do it all my way!
Ha ha in your face ha ha!
CHORUS

VERSE 2

I’ve got major plans for what I’m gonna do
My energy’s there now, there’s nothing left for you
Only my dreams that make me stay here,
Ha ha in your face, ha ha!
Did you really think that I would stay
Humiliate myself doin’ it all your way
I know some guys who are gonna treat me right with respect for what I do they aint never gonna bite!
Yeah that's right I know how to get what I want
I’m not gonna be afraid any more
Always gonna say what I’m gonna say,
Ain’t nobody gonna get in my way
No-o you’re not gonna patronise me
No no
That ain’t the way it’s supposed to be
Gonna break away from it now!
Ha ha, in your face ha ha!

CHORUS

BRIDGE

I’m feelin’ a little more comfortable now
I’m gonna stand up and be proud.
Every action has a reaction,
Every question has a noble truth,
But to receive it,
We must believe in the power that surrounds us!

VOCALS: ONE DAY I’LL TAKE YOUR X8

If You Come Home

IF YOU COME HOME-CAPTAIN SMASH

(lyrics in bold include backing vocals)

VERSE 1
Putting’ that other stuff aside and under the ground
I wanna know how she rides you when I’m not around
And now you’re gonna go and stuff yourself up
Gonna smoke, gonna drink,
Gonna inject yourself with her lovin’
And now, I’m crying all alone
And now I’m waitin’ for an explanation if you come home
Home to me, if you come home to me…

VERSE 2
Would things be better left unsaid
Or would it be better to throw away all the good times we shared
Is it more humilatin’ for me to tell ya that I know
Or more humiliatin’ to tell ya that I know
If you come home

CHORUS
There’s nothing left to stomach
There’s nothing left to say,
If you wanna get out of this you’ve got to change your ways,
Don’t worry ‘bout yourself so much and turn your back around
Sooner or later you’ll realise I’ve got you worked out.

I’ve been gettin’ calls don’t you know that you’ve been seen
I’ve been waitin’ for yours to find out where you’ve been
Can’t believe I ever thought that you might have grown
I’m getting a little tired of sittin’ here all alone
VERSE 3
I won’t be forced to walk with shame
I won’t be forced to play your silly game
I have my own intentions
I’m tellin’ you that I know where you hide
‘cause I had plans and dreams and visions with you by my side
please come home
CHORUS
BRIDGE
Now there’s nothing left to stomach there’s nothing left to say
If you wanna get out of this you’ve got to change your ways
Don’t worry about yourself so much and turn your back around
Sooner or later you’ll realise
I’ve got you worked out
Please come home
CHORUS X2, FINISH ON “SO PLEASE COME HOME!”
