"BROTHERSISTER live @ THE JADE MONKEY, FEB 15th 2008"

BROTHERSISTER (****)
How DOES an Adelaide band thrive for over three years, release an album to international acclaim and still not make a blip on my radar with all the ridiculous alcohol poisoning I do in service to this scene? (no Lyla and Southpoor that is a rhetorical question!) Fuck, beats the shit out've me! but such is the enigma that is BrotherSister here for their SECOND album launch. Of course it DOES help my utter cluelessness that both band members have been based in the USA for the last three years: brother Dante hails from New York, sister Xavia from Nashville, whilst my gig review tonight will be phoned in from whatever midsized rock I've been living under all these years. BrotherSister: soaringly orchestral and glitch electronic, they're reminiscent of Massive Attacks' "Teardrop", "Sing" by the Dresden Dolls, "Somersault" by Decoder Ring, Sia's "Breathe Me" and just about every other bittersweetness in strings and keys they flood through cafes, book stores and high end fashion boutiques everytime they misplace their Feist CD. It's everything you love from the vocals of Tori Amos and Win Butler, the rhythm section of Thom Yorke's "Erasure" and the widescreen introspection of Bat For Lashes minus all the annoying accompanying cutscenes from Grey's Anatomy that'd make you want to point both barrels of that shotgun to your skull for a Jackson Pollack self portrait. Joined by bass, strings and one of Adelaide's many talented halfling drummers, it's a truly awe inspiring experience! - Spoz's rant http://spoz.blogspot.com

"BROTHERSISTER by David Knight"

Well-travelled siblings Xavia and Dante Nou’s debut album The Wunder Tales finally saw the duo base themselves in their hometown of Adelaide to record a diverse collection of downtempo pop that fulfils the promise they showed on their 2006 EP. But after a year in Adelaide, they will soon be parting ways, just after the public gets to catch the duo launch the CD, as Dante will be heading to New York for an internship.
“He’ll be in New York City for two months working with Shilo Design,” explains his sister Xavia, before answering if she would like to tour the record once it’s out there.
“I would like to tour the album. I think in the two months that Dante’s away I’m going to put some groundwork in and get some things lined up for the end of the year. There’s even a possibility of when he’s over there to meet up with him and do a few shows. I would like to think we would go over and do a release in the States and maybe even in Europe, but whether it’s this year or next year we’re not sure. But we’d definitely like to play some shows and he’s coming back in May, so that will be a good chance to line a few things up in Australia.”
BrotherSister aren’t your normal young up-and-coming musical group. The siblings have been based overseas, with Xavia applying her trade in Nashville for many years as a cellist in various bands and Dante working for a street theatre company in the UK. For an album of mainly downbeat tunes, BrotherSister show much diversity from gentle guitar pop to gorgeous lullaby-like atmospherics. This brother and sister act pull off a range of influences and experiment more than most big names acts of similar ilk. A fantastic example of this experimentation is the Dante-penned For Long, which has a child-like sped up vocal working over a piano that brings a humorous edge to the group.
“I did that as a demo,” says Dante. “And I thought it would be a nice little interlude kinda thing.”
“I really love that track,” cuts in Xavia. “Dante made that two years ago and we were both like, ‘Oh can we get away with it?’. You’ve got to have a novelty track; I think it’s better if you don’t take yourself too seriously. If you can add a track like that to a record and get away with it, then I think, the music world is in a good place.”
BrotherSister aren’t signed… yet, as they are looking for the right deal that they feel comfortable with, but they will wait, as to them music should be done as something you love, something that is obvious when you hear The Wunder Tales.
“I think it’s always good not to be able to live off just music,” says Dante. “I work enough to live and the rest of my time I do music. As long as you don’t have to depend on it, ‘cause I’ve know so many people that have tried to live off music and it hasn’t worked out very well.”
BrotherSister launch The Wunder Tales at The Jade Monkey on Fri Feb 15 with Mr Wednesday. For more info on BrotherSister head to <myspace.com/littlebrothersister>. - Rip it Up (AUS)

Bio

"Sounds like a chamber orchestra playing electronic, classical, and folk music remixed by prefuse 73." VENUS zine (USA) winter 2006.
The music of BrotherSister is made by Dante and Xavia Nou, a pair of multi-instrumetalists with a taste for electronic sound design, string arranging, pagan like melodies, animation sound tracking and beat trickery. Heralding from Adelaide in SA, this sibling duo are just as at home in a suitacase, having lived and worked with performers and musicians all around the world.
Stemming from many generations of musicians, or Estonian and Australian heritage, they started playing and recording as children. But the project only really began in 2005 with Xavia based in the USA as a resident and touring cellist and Dante working in the UK with a travelling street performing company. Making a studio of any room with some peace and quiet, the pair compile songs by sending files to each other across oceans and cities, layering melodic acoustic instruments over electronic beats and sounds, creating an evocative mix of whimsical and sometimes bleak tale-like songs.
“gentle guitar pop to gorgeous lullaby-like atmospherics...[BrotherSister] experiment more than most big named acts of similar ilk” Rip It Up (AUS), February 08
BrotherSister have been received warmly for a sprinkling of shows in the USA and AUS with band helpers including Ryan Manolakis, Nat Wiseman, Jeremy Lutito (jars of clay), Matt Slocum (sixplense none the richer) and Kirk Cornelius. But kept their heads down in adelaide in 2007, to finish their anticipated second album- 'The Wunder Tales'. (”wunder” referring to a place where a collection of rarities and curiosities are exhibited). Following in the self produced footsteps of their debut self titled EP,'The Wunder Tales’ has kept in the international tradition with mastering completed in Nashville by Marc Chevalier and artwork in NYC by grammy award winning design firm- SHILO (www.shilo.tv) who are currently working on the the bands second music video in NYC.
