"Xavier Lewis Named January “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With His Song "Give Back”"

Xavier Lewis ("The Antidote to R&B"), a singer & songwriter based in Atlanta, GA, has won the January SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of his song “Give Back" (co-written by Hosea James Givan II). This song has been released as a single, and will be included on his debut album, which Lewis will release independently later this year.

“Give Back ” is a soulful, uptempo number which has an anthem-like feel to it. The song, with both its lyric & music, is reminiscent of the classic R&B sound of Teddy Pendergrass/Harold Melvin & Blue Notes (in the vein of "Wake Up Everybody"). And Lewis' lead vocal performance is excellent--his soulful, passionate vocals sometimes resemble Luther Vandross' stirring voice. "Give Back" was recorded in Atlanta and produced by Eric Ramey (who is based in Huntsville, AL).

Lewis grew up in Miami, FL, and he got into music at a young age. He attended Miami Union Academy (a private school), where he learned to play several instruments (baritone horn, trumpet, percussion). and he started singing publicly early on. Lewis was inspired by listening to such artists as Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones and Whitney Houston, and he's been impressed by the multi-faceted career of R. Kelly (for being able to write and sing in many styles).

Following high school, Lewis attended Oakwood University in Huntsville for two years, but then he decided to move back to Miami to pursue his music career and for family reasons. In 2005, his friend Betty Wright (legendary R&B singer), referred him to hip hop/soul artist Urban Mystic, and he subsequently worked as a background singer in Mystic's band for two years.

Xavier Lewis Lewis' big break came in 2008, when he became a semifinalist on the popular America's Got Talent NBC-TV series. Lewis performed on the show twice, and he was selected by the show's producers to sing on the Today show (on NBC). The exposure from these TV appearances helped Lewis establish his solo artist career, and set the stage for him to release the singles "Give Back" and "Georgia Clay" (the latter has become the theme song for the TV show Atlanta Business Today), and record his upcoming debut album. Notably, Clay also entered a talent competition called the Georgia Lottery All Access Music Search, and he won the Grand Prize in the pop/R&B category.

Currently, Lewis (who is managed by Reginald Bernard) is looking forward to a successful 2012. "I'm excited about my videos for both 'Give Back' and 'Georgia Clay,'" said Lewis. "People have told me that 'Georgia Clay' could be an anthem for the state of Georgia, and the video will be released in February. I'm also looking forward to completing my album and releasing it this year."

In addition to his recording and video projects, Lewis has continued to perform steadily live. He has played many shows, and has opened for such major artists as Toni Braxton, Anthony Hamilton and Angie Stone.

"Georgia Lottery sends four musical acts to Hollywood"

Four Georgia musical acts are packing their bags for Hollywood – but not for anything involving “American Idol.”

No, these artists are winners of the Georgia Lottery’s All Access Music Search, a contest held in conjunction with the music-themed instant-lottery game All Access.

On Saturday, a judging panel of renowned Atlanta acts – producer Dallas Austin, singers Monica and Shawn Mullins and Zac Brown Band multi-instrumentalist Clay Cook – in conjunction with online public voting, determined the quartet of winners from a dozen finalists. Auditions were held last fall in Atlanta, Columbus, Macon and Savannah.

The four victors now head to Hollywood to record a song at Capitol Studios in the famed Capitol Records Tower.

The winners:

Hannah Thomas (country): Hailing from Covington, Thomas kickstarted her career at open mic nights at Eddie’s Attic. Her debut, “The Rest is Yet to Come,” was released independently in 2009.

KidSyc@Brandywine (hip-hop): KidSyc, an art teacher in Savannah, and bandmates Brandywine (Charles Hodge, Daniel Butler, Lane Gardner and Derrick Larry) are known for profanity-free lyrics set to innovative hip-hop.

Xavier Lewis (pop/R&B): Referring to himself as “The Antidote to R&B,” the Loganville resident grew up singing in gospel choirs and is a seasoned touring artist. His debut CD is due this year.

theKey (rock): The quintet from Macon (Clay Scott, Josh Harnevious, Ryan Cunningham, Rachel Scott and Jonathan Wisdom) has drawn comparisons to Coldplay and Matchbox Twenty with its melodic sounds and harmonizing.

"Artist of The week: Xavier Lewis"

Each week, I chat it up with an upcoming artist (singer or rapper) that is making their mark on the industry slowly but surely. This week, I caught up with upcoming Queens, NY-born R&B artist, Xavier Lewis, who calls himself “The Antidote to R&B”. We talked about his childhood, his intentions in the industry, his musical influences, upcoming performances, how we can get in contact with him, and what makes him deserving of such a title of an “antidote”. Check it out below:

1.) What change do you hope to bring to the music industry that is not already present?

The change I hope to bring is quality and authenticity back into songs. Soul music is not present right now, and I want to bring it back to the forefront.”

2.) What past or present artist would you compare yourself to and say that your musical style is most alike? Why?

I have much respect for those that have come before me—I would most compare myself to Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Donny Hathoway and Gerald Levert–These artist brought distinct soul to the industry–their voices are distinctly set a part from others. A present artist that I consider to be a role-model is Anthony Hamilton.”

3.) Along this musical journey to the top, what has been your #1 most memorable performance or moment and why?

“I’ve had so many incredible moments—I just can’t name just one. Each performance that I’ve had an opportunity to do has all been a step closer to the dream.”

4.) You call yourself the “Antidote to R&B”– what exactly does that mean and how did you come up with that title?

“If you think about the movie “I am Legend”, Will Smith held the antitode to the population in his blood. I hold the antitode to this music business within me, I am getting it back to where it needs to be and where it should be. I am the healing and the security to the industry. My manager gave me the title.”

5.) Where are you from—and what was your childhood like?

I’m from Queens, NY and raised in Miami, FL—I have biological siblings, but was raised as an only child. I was enrolled in private schooling for twelve years and was able to do a lot of things a lot of children are not able to do”.

6.) If people would like to collaborate with you or hear more of your work, where should they visit?

www.xavierlewis.com– “blog, read my bio, join my mailing list, purchase my cd through my site”

7.) Do you have any upcoming performances that we should know about?

"Xavier Lewis (NAT)"

His first name begins with one of the last letters of the alphabet, but there's nothing "last" about singer/songwriter Xavier Lewis. On the contrary, this outstanding vocal talent is about firsts, being unique and standing out in the crowd.

Born March 7, 1982 in Queens, NY, Xavier was offered a second chance at life. Despite having two biological siblings, he was raised as an only child, having been blessed to have a loving mother in his aunt, Bertha Lewis. They moved several times, finally landing in Miami, FL, where the pursuit of his dreams would begin. Valuing his gift of a mother, Xavier had no choice but to respect her upbringing. She raised him in church, encouraging him to showcase his talents in the church choir. It was at those moments that the handsome kid, young and stylish with a powerful, soulful voice would debut, as many stellar vocalists before him, in church. Xavier's passion for music was ignited, along with his deep love for the arts. Thus began his buzzed-about singing career. During his days at Oakwood College in Huntsville, AL, an institution of both higher learning and creativity that has turned out numbers of notable musicians, such as Prince, Take 6 and Brian McKnight, Xavier honed his craft in their touring gospel choir, Dynamic Praise.

However, much like the common problem so many artists encounter, Xavier endured the pains and struggles of being locked into a bad record deal in 2006, until Reginald Bernard, now his manager, began to pave his road to freedom by calling on an old high school coach and mentor, Ted Gustus, for assistance. Coach Gustus then took things a step farther introducing Xavier to a group called Men of Faith Ventures, who took a special interest in him, and provided the ultimate mentoring and support system, sowing the seed of enhanced self-determination in him about his life and goals. The counseled him to establish his own company, and as a result, Xavier created Millennium Soul Music Group Inc.

His humble focus, dedicated determination, inspiring perseverance and never-ending work ethic has already begun to build Xavier very impressive portfolio. In 2005, he was chosen on the spot to sing the National Anthem for one of Laila Ali's prime time fights in Atlanta, GA, which was shown on ESPN2 and HBO. Xavier has also had the privilege of touring and performing overseas in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain and Winnipeg, Canada, during his 2-1/2 year alliance with Sobe Records R&B vocalist Urban Mystic. He's even become an international and viral sensation, by way of his standout performance on NBC-TV's hit talent competition "America's Got Talent" in 2008. The show had him represent that season's talent with a performance on the national morning show, NBC's Today Show. Then, needless to say, with a renewed focus and a strong manager in Reggie Bernard, who procured the proper legal help, as proof that you can't keep a good man down, Xavier was finally unshackled from his bad deal in early 2010.

With the accolades, the charisma, the voice and the talents, singer-songwriter Xavier Lewis is truly an aspiring, and inspiring, legend who has caught the eye of both the industry and consumers. His debut CD, "Millennium Soul" will be released in 2011, containing self-penned songs "Love In Stereo," "Back Into It," "I Know I'm In Love" and "Georgia Clay." Having accomplished many great feats already, the only thing left for this steadily rising R&B star to do is to bring soul back to R&B. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the next musical phenomenon, "The Antidote to R&B," Mr. Xavier Lewis!

"Exclusive Interview with Xavier Lewis - From Americas Got Talent to The Studio, The music Speaks"

WWS: You got your start in the church why did you choose to go R n B rather than becoming a gospel singing artist?
XL: Despite growing up in church, I wanted to bring back a message of Love, Family, Commitment, The struggle and Pain yet Triumph and Victory as well as Church itself back to the R&B platform. True Rhythm and Blues was originally about all of these things and not just SEX which most of the male R&B artists today make records about.

How did the strong musical elements of the south and church influence your music?
Well, I grew up in Miami, FL and what the average person doesn’t know or realize is that the true sound of Miami was SOUL and Funk not POP. My church was a deep, down south sanging church so no matter what, I couldn’t get away from it!

What separates you from other R n B artists out there? and how do you think you can evolve in this progressive industry?
What separates me from other artists outside of the obvious is that Imma stay true to me. I’m not interested in molding my brand or sound after what’s heard on the radio or seen on television but instead present a Brand and vocal style that grants me my own lane. I really believe that in itself guarantees me the opportunity to evolve in this progressive industry by giving the “people” Xavier Lewis-The Antidote to R&B.

What inspired the title of your album ” The Antidote To R N B?”
I haven’t come up with an official name of the album just yet but The Antidote to R&B is more so like my added-on stage name.

What are some really effective marketing and promotional tools you have used and are currently utilizing?
You can definitely keep up with me on FB by joining my fan page, The Antidote to R&B and on TWITTER @ XavierLewisXL as well as checking out my website www.XavierLewis.com.

What message are you trying to send to listeners through your music?
At the end of the day, the message I want to send out to my listeners can be summarized in one word, “LOVE.” It’s a message that comes in many different forms from courtship to marriage to make up and break up to stepping out to baby mama/daddy drama.

If the opportunity presented itself would you be ok with taking a behind the scenes role as a ghost writer or do you feel your music is less effective if performed by someone else?
I’m interested in being a true professional within the uses of my God-given talents so as a result, that involves everything from singing backgrounds to ghost writing and producing to running my company as CEO of Millennium Soul Music Group. With this being said, I believe that my music is most effective no matter whose performing it but just by getting the message out there. Now on the other hand, there are some writers out there that are interested in promoting a message I may not agree with so personally I would choose what I will and will not allow to be my choice of song.

What is more significant to you in the realm of music the lyrics or the melody to the song and why?
To me, lyrics and melody go hand in hand. There isn’t one that’s more significant over the other. It’s a custom suited fit! Melody can make you dance, cry, get crunk, think, dream and aspire but the lyrics must match to create and deliver the story line. So I love them both equally.

What essentials do you feel are necessary for a good development and management team?
I definitely want a team that’s professional and capable of multitasking and wearing multiple hats. Some artists prefer management to be nasty and pushy but I prefer management to be people friendly and personable and I want a team that’s more willing to create it’s own path instead of choosing the path most traveled.

What does the future hold and what aspirations do you intend on embellishing throughout this year?
The future for me, Xavier Lewis, holds a world of opportunities from music, movies, record label, acting, autobiography, clothing line, modeling plus some but most of all, by the end of the year anticipate being halfway to a household name, getting the “BRAND” out to the world!

"Lewis Heading to Hollywood"

As the big winner of the Georgia Lottery All Access Music Search winner in the Pop/R&B genre, Loganville musician Xavier Lewis is headed to Hollywood to record a track at the legendary Capitol Records Tower.

"I've been living in the Loganville area for five years now and am very excited to carry the flag for Loganville and represent the city on both a national and international platform," Lewis said following his win, confessing he was "still on cloud 9 and just enjoying the moment."

"It's so great to see all the hard work finally begin to pay off," he said.

The Georgia Lottery's All Access Music Search winners were announced in a live televised special Jan. 14 with Lewis, who as a musician goes by the name Xavier Lewis - The Antidote to R&B, beating Phillippia of Lawrenceville and Amber Bri Oliver of Columbus for the Pop/R&B title. The winners were selected by a combination of online voting and celebrity judges, including Georgia musicians Dallas Austin, Monica, Shaw Mullins and Clay Cook of the Zac Brown Band. The televised show was hosted by Entertainment Tonight correspondent Kevin Frazier and choreographed by well-known actress and entertainer Jasmine Guy.

This might be a big win for this local full-time musician, but it isn't the first taste of success for Lewis and it is unlikely to be the last either.

"As an independent artist, I've toured professionally as a background singer and now headliner," Lewis said. "In 2008, I became one of America's favorites to win it all on NBC's hit TV show, ‘America's Got Talent' and went on to represent the show live in New York on the Today Show."

Before heading to Hollywood, Lewis will be in Nashville this weekend auditioning for a new show on NBC called "The Voice." He will then be back to again audition in Atlanta next weekend for the next season of "America's Got Talent."

Music has been a way of life for the 29-year-old R&B singer for the past 23 years.

"I sang my first solo at 6," Lewis said, adding he got his start singing in the church. "I was born in Queens, N.Y. and raised in Miami and have been singing professionally for the past 13 years."

Although he did have two biological siblings, Lewis was raised as an only child by his aunt, Bertha Lewis, who made sure he was raised in the church. That was where she first encouraged him to showcase his talents by singing in the church choir and it was there where his passion for music was first sparked. As his talents blossomed, Lewis had the opportunity to tour and perform in other countries such as Spain and Canada. In 2005, he was chosen on the spot to sing the national anthem for one of Laila Ali's prime time fights in Atlanta, earning him a spot on ESPN2 and HBO.

Lewis said he's on the road a lot at the moment but every now and again he does have local performances and anyone who might want to hear a live performance can get an update on his calendar by joining his mailing list at www.Xavier Lewis.com or connect with him on Facebook or Twitter.

It’s been Xavier’s humble focus, dedicated determination, inspiring perseverance and never-ending work ethic that’s always kept his eyes pressed toward the mark. With the accolades, the charisma, the voice and the talents, this Singer-Songwriter, Actor, Philanthropist, Entrepreneur and creative Visionary, is truly an aspiring Legend who has caught the eye of both the industry and it’s consumers. He’s accomplished many great feats already but continues to pursue his dream and now the only thing left for this steadily rising R&B star to do is to bring soul back to R&B. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the next musical phenomenon, “The Antidote to R&B,” Mr. Xavier Lewis!
