Xin Seha and The Town

“사진 찍을 때 80년대 포즈 같은 거 하는데, 다른 사람들이 쟤 뭐 하는 거야? 그럴 때도 있어요.” 70년대 말 콜드웨이브 계열의 음악을 멋지다 말하고, 플랙스플로테이션 영화의 주인공같이 구레나룻을 다듬은 신세하는 올해 스물둘. “좋아하는 것들을 습득해서 이런 걸 만들었어, 란 포인트에서 자부심을 갖는 거예요.” 그의 음악은 그가 받은 영향을 굳이 숨기지 않는다. “제가 안 살아본 시대잖아요. 거리감에서 오는 호기심.” 대부분의 곡을 쓴 김아일의 에서 신세하의 호기심은 80년대 어디쯤에 맞닿아 있는 듯하다. 잔뜩 증폭된 신시사이저 소리, 먹먹한 공간감. 말쑥한 뉴로맨틱스 밴드와 짓궂은 네이티브 텅 힙합 패거리가 번갈아 떠오른다. 거기서 김아일과 신세하는 음악에 얽힌 것이라면 모조리 흡수해내는 것처럼 보였다. 옷차림은 물론이고 그 시절 멋쟁이들의 행동양식까지. 한편 신세하는 옷 잘 입는 남자애들이 그렇듯, 음악에서도 도드라진 포인트를 드러낸다. “귀에 쏙쏙 들어오는 베이스 라인이나 신시사이저가 엎치락뒤치락하는 거 재밌어요. 한 개가 나오면 하나가 빠지고.” 모든 걸 조화롭게 꾸민다기보다 좋아하는 걸 내세우겠다는 마음. 그건 일보단 놀이에서 나오는 태도일 것이다. “그냥 노는 거죠. 구글링 하고 유튜브 보고 그러다 자연스럽게 되는 것 같아요.” 놀 땐 친구들이 있기 마련. 얼마 전 데뷔 EP를 낸 배드 조이스카웃은 요즘 그의 든든한 친구들이다. 신세하는 곡도 쓰고, 첫 싱글 ‘Birthday’엔 내친 김에 피처링도 했다. “레드 기운이 많은 분홍색? 레드는 정열적이고 섹시하잖아요. 제 음악은 새빨간 건 아니고 한발 물러난 부드러운 느낌인 것 같아요.” 얼굴에 드리운 자홍빛은 이 말을 듣기 전에 골라뒀다.

“Sometimes people asking ‘what the hell is he doing?’ when I’m making 80 style pose for photoshooting.” Xin Seha, a 22 year old boy with well-trimmed sideburns thinks 70s coldwave music is cool. He is proud that he is self-taught and created what he likes. He doesn’t hesitate to say the music he got influenced by. “I’m curious of the era that I never existed” His music reminds us some edge of 80s – amplified synthesizer, spaciousness, new romanticism and wicked native tongue hip-hop clan. It seems Xin Seha absorbs everything related to music which includes fashion as well as the attitude. “I like catchy bass line and the zigzag of synthesizer. One comes in when another one goes out.” The birth of his music came from googling and searching on youtube which is natural. He also wrote some tracks for his friends Bad Joyscoutt and featured on their 1st single ‘Birthday’. “I think my music is pink which has a lot of red. 음반을 열어젖히는 첫 트랙의 이름은 ‘Youth’다. 이보다 적절할 수 없다는 인상. 신세하는 젊다. 그렇게 젊은 채로, 과거의 젊음을 맘껏 탐험한다. 그 옛날 신시사이저가 막 출시되었을 때, 새로움에 목마른 뮤지션들은 무거운 악기를 내던지고 온갖 소리를 만들 수 있는 건반 앞에 앉았다. 거기서 나오는 무한한 소리야말로 기존 음악과는 완전히 다른 영역에 있는 것이었다. 그리고 음악은 혼자서 몰두할 수 있는 일이 되었다. 혼자란 것은 그야말로 자기 맘대로 할 수 있다는 얘기다. 돈도 상대적으로 적게 들고 밴드도 필요 없다. 신세하는 그때의 소리를 집요하게 탐구하는 만큼, 그런 태도에도 집중한다. 들리는 둥 마는 둥 하는 보컬, 몇몇 트랙에서 과시적으로 두드러지는 베이스와 드럼, 대체 저 옷은 어디서 구했나 싶은 뮤직비디오의 복장. 그렇게 자신을 맘껏 드러내며, 무엇보다 ‘솔로 음반’이라 부르기 적절한 데뷔작 을 냈다.

The first track of this album is called ‘Youth’. Nothing can be better than this title for the first track of his first album. Xin Seha is young and he likes travelling the youth that people used to enjoyed in the past. When synthesizer just came out, a lot of musicians who were longing for freshness left all their heavy old instrument and sit in front of the machine which makes thousands of different sounds. The sound was totally next level compared to what they used to listened to. Finally, music became what one person can handle from A to Z. Doing something yourself means you can do whatever you want. You don’t need to find band members or you don’t have to spend too much money. As Xin Seha is consistently searching for the sound of ‘that’ era he never forget the attitude itself. Exaggerated bass and drums, intendedly crushed pronunciations, bold clothes we never know where he got from in his music videos. 올 해로 스물두살이 된 신세하가 흰색 터틀넥 톱과 청재킷을 입고 베르사체풍의 검정 가죽바지를 흰색 양말안에 넣어 입은 모습은, 영락없이 미국 1980년대 영화 속에서 음악과 여자를 찾아 집을 나온 학생과도 같다. “1980년대에 안살아서 그런지 그 시대에 대한 동경이 있어요. 음악의 장르를 어투라고 한다면, 제가 생각하기에 멋진 어투는 1980년대에요. 사랑을 얘기하든, 젊음을 얘기하든, 그 어투로 하려고요.” 신세하의 어투라면 필요없는 물건도 왕창 살 것만 같다. 지금 음악 신을 뜨겁게 달구고 있는 래퍼 김아일의 데뷔 음반 [Boylife in 12”] 에 들어있는 그가 만든 곡 9개를 들어보면 말이다. 김아일의 눈썰미는 알아줘야 한다. 그는 신세하의 텀블러에 올라온 곡을 듣고 연락해 음악을 만들어달라고 했다. “고3 여름방학 때 아일이 형에게서 연락이 왔어요. ‘아, 수능봐야 하는데’ 하면서 만들었죠. 뭐, 수능에 크게 영향을 주진 않았지만요.” 그의 음악은 쫄깃하며 눈부시다. 프린스가 입은 번쩍거리는 재킷 같다고 할까? “아무리 곡을 잘 쓰더라도 그 안에 로맨스가 없다면 제 타입은 아니에요.” 특히 SAMOC 와 V*$*V 를 듣는 순간은 너무 매혹적이어서 어지럼증마저 느껴진다. 드랙퀸, 와 같은 1980년대 영화들, 부치 콜린스와 조지 클린튼의 펑카델릭과 팔라먼트 같은 펑크, 조르조 모로더의 영화 음악. 키가 작지만 힐 신은 키 큰 여자들과 함께 밴드를 하는 프린스가 그에게 온통 영향을 끼쳤다. 하지만 그의 음악은 어디 갱들이 판치는 시카고나 디트로이트 느낌은 아니다. 그는 조용한 도시 과천에서 나고 자랐다. “그게 저의 평범함에 영향을 미친 것 같아요. 힙합은 정말 좋아했지만 독서실 가서 공부하고 그게 딱 제 음악인 것 같아요.” 그렇다면 그를 뒤덮은 1980년대 음악과 영화는 어디서? “구글이죠!” 그는 프로듀싱은 물론이고 직접 랩도 하고 노래도 하는 데뷔 음반을 준비중이다. 그가 소중한 힌트 하나를 줬다. “가사중에 ‘금잔화’가 들어가요. 재미있게 발견한 단어죠.”

Xin Seha exactly looks like a boy who just left his hometown for music and girls in 1980s movies. “I’ve got such a fantasy for 80s. Maybe because I can never exist in that era.” If the genre is the tone of speaking, I think the coolest tone is 1980s. I’m going to keep that tone whenever I say love or youth.” With his tone, I feel like I’m going to buy boxes of stuff that I don’t even need at all. You will agree with me if you listen to 9 songs that Xin Seha produced on Kim Isle’s debut album [Boylife in 12”]. Kim Isle contacted Xin Seha right after he listened to the music on Seha’s Tumblr. “He contacted me when I was having the last summer vacation of my high school. I was concerned about my university entrance exam but I made it anyway. It didn’t affect to my exam that much actually tho.” His music is shining and chewable like Prince’s jacket. “It’s not my thing if there’s no romance in the song even if it is really good.” He is influenced by drag queen, 80s movie like ‘Ghost Busters’, ‘Back To The Future’, Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, Giorgio Moroder and short Prince who plays with tall girls wearing high hills on the stage. His music is not Detroit or Chicago where you can see full of gang though. He was born and raised in the quiet city Gwacheon. “I think I’m very ordinary person. I love Hip-hop but I was more of nerd who goes to study after school.” Then where did he find all the movies and music from 80s? “Googling!” - Dazed & Confused Korea
