"CD.Review - From The Vault"

Produced by X-TERRA based out of Pittston, PA. X-TERRA is a hard rock/heavy metal Christian three piece that has been rocking the Pennsylvania music scene since the '80's. "From The Vault" is a collection of songs previously released on cassette which have remained fun and band favorites throughout the years. Recorded with the band's current line-up which includes Bill Hunt, lead guitar and vocals, Anne Kachline, bass and backing vocals and Bob Kachline on drums and backing vocals. "From The Vault" embodies '80's metal to the fullest extent. Opening track "Who Said" sets the tone for the album, no holds barred glam metal through and through. Featuring classic metal riffs and high-pitched vocals (think Judas Priest), "Who Said" embodies "metal mania" unleashing an amplified guitar attack on the listener....classic. Track 4 "The Lord Is My Shepherd' delivers a strong message and a blend of power guitar and steady vocals. Straight forward and in your face just the way metal should be. Track 7 "Keep The Lightning" is sure to keep your attention with its steady beats, ritualistic guitar riffs anf high powered vocals proving that "lightning" does indeed strike twice. It's a catchy song, guaranteed to have you singing along and wanting more. Track 8, "Smile For Me" is a classic hair power ballad, reminiscent of early Cinderella or Guns N' Roses, opening with a scaled down guitar riff, slow back beat and topped off with Hunt's metal croon. The heartbreak is felt in the final guitar solo, immersing you in X-TERRA's melodic message. Break out your lighters and salute X-TERRA for the gem! Track 9 "The Gadarene" is a standout track, full of surprises, with twists and turns, ups and downs, this track is sure to convert any nonbeliever. At 5:41 minutes long "The Gadarene" tells a heavy tale in the same fashion as Maiden would, however delivering a very different message. Album closer "For The Want Of A Nail" features a non-traditional duet with Bill and Anne. Their message is delivered brilliantly in this melodic metal while flirting with a different sound from the rest of the album. Melding an eclectic mix of songs from their "vault", X-TERRA did not play it safe. with "From The Vault" reminding us that metal can be cloaked in attitude while still delivering a positive message. Dust off the old leather jacket, pop "From The Vault" into your cd. player and remind yourself metal is not dead!

"Indie CD. Reviews"

X-TERRA - Wolves (Hard Rock)

Once in a great while there's a band that's totally commited to their calling and unwilling to yield to any amount of adversity. X-TERRA is such a band. WWith nearly twenty years of music under their belt X-TERRA continues to preach their rather loud brand of Gospel in and around the Mid Atlantic region. Though X-TERRA has been around a long time this is no old school retread of a band. X-TERRA has always kept up with the times and speaks to all generations of hard music lovers. Their unique style of hard rock/classic metal is affectionally referred to as Groove Metal. X-TERRA has been honored in publications around the world and is receiving airplay in 25 states and fourteen countries. Bob and Anne Kachline are founding members and have seen this band through five distinct phases with each culminating in a fully produced and professional CD. project. Wolves is the most recent of these and showcases the depth that only two decades of experience in the industry can bring. The material here has surprising range for the genre while always staying true to it. My first experience with X-TERRA was witnessing them perform in concert for Mike Knott. This most impressive live act is a must see to fully appreciate the power of the band. X-TERRA really rocks! - Servant's Heart

"X-NIHILO"

X-TERRA "X-NIHILO"
Interesting thing about music and musical styles in particular is that the old adage is true that musical styles do run in cycles and everything old becomes new again. We had the 80's with hair metal, the 90's with grunge and now in the 21st Century there's an almost anything goes attitude as far as musical genres are concerned. I say this because the new X-TERRA CD. "X-NIHILO" revives the 80's metal genre (think Motley Crue with a twist of Sabbath riffage add a lead vocal somewhere between Vince Neil and Steve "Autograph" Plunkett with some 80's metal "gang" backing vocals and you get the idea) while at the same time cleverly updating the stlye for the present day. X-TERRA features Bill Hunt on guitar and lead vocals with husband and wife rhythm section Anne and Bob Kachline on bass and drums respectively. While Hunt acquits himself well throughout the album it's really the Kachline's lock-step rhythms that drive the album and provide the solid foundation from which Hunt delivers his vocals and guitar fireworks. Writing duties are shared rather evenly between Hunt and Anne Kachline and it's a credit to them that despite each writing their own songs individually and over a period of years that the songs fluidly meld together to form one cohesive CD. While the CD. skimps a little on packaging there were no short cuts taken on the production end as the drums and bass sound full and powerful and there's plenty of 80's style "big reverb" to go around the vocals and guitars. The short opening and closing title cuts, where we learn that X-TERRA means "out of the earth" and X-NIHILO means "out of nothing" are a bit odd and the CD's 14 tracks clock in at 73 minutes, a lot to listen to in one sitting, but if you're a fan of 80's era metal who is tired of hitting the repeat button on your "K-Tel Presents The Best of The 80's Heavy Metal" CD. and looking for something new, X-TERRA and their CD. "X-NIHILO" may be just what you're looking for.

Formed in 1985, X-TERRA's music is just as relevant today as it was in the days of big hair and spandex. Influenced by such bands as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Stryper, X-TERRA has ventured into such areas as blues and folk-rock while still remaining true to it's 70's -80's metal roots.
