Biography

The XYLOURIS ENSEMBLE is a cross generational group of ten musicians who together have developed a unique musical style based in the rich tradition of Cretan music.

The Xylouris Ensembles music draws its inspirations from the many historical and metaphoric links between Crete and Australia and beyond. From stories of urban and rural landscapes, the epic poetry of Erotokritos, threads of connection woven by the wartime sheltering of Australian soldiers by Cretan shepherds, by the Greek diaspora to Melbourne and Melburnians, the Ensemble creates multiple senses of belonging; These are the wells from which the Ensembles compositions and lyrics draw.

The Xylouris Ensemble began in the early 1990s in Melbourne, and released five albums over a ten year period, two of them ARIA-nominated. The Ensemble recently reformed after a hiatus caused by geographical separation and child-raising by key members.

The 2000s have brought a thrilling new development in the Ensembles life, when the old hands are being joined by a new generation of musicians - children of some of the original members, raised with the Ensembles music around them, and now bringing their own fresh take and attitude to the material and performance style.

The Xylouris Ensemble has had professional collaborations and joined the stage with a wide range of international musicians including The Dirty Three, Cesaria Evora, Psarandonis and Angelakas.
