Biography

Never mind comparisons to Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Nico, Siouxsie, or Annie Lennox ~ Xyras unique vocal phrasing, and melodies, intriguing lyrical content and poignant delivery make a statement all their own.

After moving to the US from Germany, Xyra began music and piano lessons at age five, and voice at eight, performing before her teens. At age 14, Xyras mother surprised her with an electric guitar. At age 15, she joined her first band, playing original music.

True to her roots, Xyra resumed vocal training ~ this time with Director of Music Theater, Charles Williams, at The Levine School of Music, in DC, and renowned, Mezzo-soprano, Medea Namoradze.

Xyra is a prolific songwriter who created most of the material for five musical releases available worldwide, the most recent produced by triple-Platinum Grammy winner, Jim Ebert at Cue Recording Studios.

Over the years, Xyra & Co. garnered a vote for a Grammy Nomination, received extensive media attention ~ such as reviews and features in the Washington Post, NPR and PRI, and international and national airplay.

Currently, Xyra can be heard performing with Andrew Cann on piano, and Eric S. Uleich on lead guitar, both formerly with her 7-piece band, Verborgen.

All I Can Do

Written By: Xyra Harper-Cann

All I Can Do
© 2010, Xyra Harper-Cann

Last time around
It wasn’t easier
But I had a song
To sing
When life got rough
I’d settle in
With lantern light
And a song to sing

Chorus 1:
All I can do
All I can do
All I can do
Is sing my song

Though strange winds howl
I know there’s peace
And we can find it
Within our reach
So many questions
So many unknowns
Too many heartaches
Too far from the throne

Repeat Chorus 1:

BREAK

When life was easier
We’d settle in
With lantern light
Feeling safe, within
Light the lantern
In your heart
Smile from the inside
Radiate the Light

Chorus 2:
All we can do
All you can do
All I can do is sing my song

Chorus 3:
All you can do
All we can do
All I can do is sing my song

Not to Fall

Not to Fall
© 2010, Xyra Harper-Cann

I can fall, but I choose not to
This is not all there is to be...
I can lie back, if I want to
And let life come to me

Chorus 1:
But when the sky opens
And light pours on to me,
Something clicks, and I awaken...
Voices of Angels speak to me

BREAK

I can fall, but I choose not to
I can collapse, in lethargy...
I can rise up, and face the music
Listen to truth, inside of me

Chorus 2:
But when the darkness quickens,
Storm clouds form over me...
I kiss the rain… embrace the moment...
Everything is meant to be

I can fall, but I choose not to
This is not all there is to be...
I can lie back, if I want to
And let life come to me

Chorus 1:
But when the sky opens
And light pours on to me,
Something clicks, and I awaken...
Voices of Angels speak to me

SAD

Written By: Xyra Harper-Cann

SAD
© 2010, Xyra Harper-Cann

All I have, I got the hard way
Easily, reminding me
That everyone thinks I got it easily
Little do they know of me!

Sad … Sad … Sad … Sad…

The scars don’t always show
When the pain is emotional
Not everything is up front –
Out in the open

Sad … Sad … Sad … Sad…

I am smiling on the outside
Too bad … Too Bad …
My youth is flying out of the window
Old crow waits, sitting on the gate

I’m sad, too bad…

I put my woes in an envelope
Addressed to God
Archangels picked it up
And smiled at me
And delivered it to God’s door

Not sad, Not sad ... anymore

Charmed life of plenty
Now, I am running on Holy empty
Look for good and you will find it
And be sad, no more

Not sad, I’m glad ... evermore

DREAMS (My Life is for the Living)

DREAMS ~ My Life is for the Living

(All submissions by this artist were Produced by Jim Ebert, and Engineered by Sean Russell at Cue Recording Studios)

Corners turned in ancient city Conjuring unwritten history
Fear of hiding hidden beauty

Dreams -
On my windowpane
Dreams -
Kissed by summer rain -
Dreams -

Cast-out spells spill
Down the drain,
And falter as the underling
Cast-out spells,
Abandoned alleyways
No one sees me standing here

Dreams -
On my windowpane
Dreams -
Kissed by summer rain -
Dreams -

How can another try to steal my life?
How can another think such violent thoughts?
My life is for the living

Dreams -
Dreams…
Dreams -
Dreams -

GOD

Written By: Xyra Harper-Cann

GOD (Where Are You Now?)
© 2010 - Xyra Harper-Cann

When the world stops
And I get off
And no one is around
You speak to me,
As if on hallowed ground

Chorus:
God, where are you now?
God, where are you now?
Many want to know
Where they are to go

The pious sit, with Holy books
Looking for you there…
Women die, if they defy
Covering their hair

Chorus:
God, where were you, then?
God, where were you, then?
Where were you, then?

? Medium BREAK
In the Holy Land, so few
Know your name
Are there any Chosen Ones?
In your eyes, we're all the same!

Chorus:
God, please speak to them
God, please speak to them
Before it is too late -
It is too late!

When the world stops
And I get off
And no one is around
You speak to me,
As if on hallowed ground

Chorus:
God, where are you now?
God, where are you now?
Where are you, now?
Where are you, now?
Speak to me,
Speak to me,
Speak to me~
GOD …
GOD!
