The best kept secret in music

Yannick Nézet-Séguin, not yet 30, seems to have been born to conduct, and the two Canadian orchestras lucky enough to see him regularly on their podiums count themselves lucky, though maybe not for long. Nézet-Séguin is currently artistic director of the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal as well as principal guest conductor of the Victoria Symphony, and perhaps, as Mariss Jansons was with his home-town orchestra in Oslo, Nézet-Séguin will be faithful to them even after his career takes off internationally.
That will probably be soon though, if this Mahler 4 disc is any indication.
Mahler's fourth is probably his least tragic symphony. In Nézet-Séguin's hands, it is almost triumphant, and even the macabre references to death in the second movement are buoyantly ironic. The paired winds in Mahler's wonderful orchestrations march past us like the animals into Noah's ark in Atma's beautiful recorded sound. And soprano Karina Gauvin's paradise is sweet indeed.

young Montrealer Yannick Nézet-Séguin has a knack for getting right whatever style of music he turns his attention to...
The balance is ideal throughout - a huge feat, given that the recording was made under the acoustically nightmarish dome of St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal. - The Toronto Star

Bio
At the helm of the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal since March 2000, Yannick Nézet-Séguin has worked tirelessly to broaden the scope of the orchestras involvement in a variety of venues, while
always maintaining his own rigorous standards and keeping in close touch with the music-loving public.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin is in demand with all the leading European, American and even Australian
symphony orchestras including, among others, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the
Rotterdam Philharmonic, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony
Orchestra, the Flemish Radio Orchestra, the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Stockholm
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (Australia). He has also performed as guest conductor of several major Canadian orchestras, notably those of the cities of
Toronto, Halifax, Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria, and Vancouver. His success is evident from the fact that
he has been invited back by all these orchestras.
In the course of the 2006-2007 season, he will have several debut performances, notably in London (London Philharmonic), Paris (Orchestre national de France), and Dresden (Staatskapelle Dresden).
