Alicia “Ya-Yah” Townsend is the product of a strong musical upbringing and years of training in the performance arts. Townsend's passion is strongly motivated as a songwriter and dancer.

As a youth, Ya-Yah's youth in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago was characterized by a heavy involvement in her family's Baptist church, which conscripted her to sing in choir at an early age. In choir she began to develop her talent as a gifted vocal performer at the age of five years-old.

Townsend focused her skills as writer both in song and literature with stints as an editor for her high school newspaper and also as the chief songwriter in musical products and bands. Musical projects she's been involved with include Chi, CrazyLovesickMule, 2Bijoux & Rock N' Soul.

These writing and vocal talents were enhanced by Ms. Townsend's extensive training as a performance artist starting at the age of ten years-old studying at the Boitsov Classical School of Ballet in Chicago. She was also popular high school as a cheerleader and later on attended the Joel Hall Dance Center where she trained in ballet, jazz, modern and tap dance performance on a scholarship.

Townsend's persistence as a proponent for giving back to the community led to her involvement with the Free Streets Programs in Chicago. Her talent and generous work led to amazing opportunities enabling her to travel New York City and Germany workshopping theater and musical performance.
Currently, Townsend resides in the cozy Bay Area with her son, Ty—a feisty nine year-old Scorpio. Townsend enjoys going to live shows, yoga and thrift store shopping in her spare time. She admits to having a penchant for 60's classic rock pioneers like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and rock n' roll godfathers like Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

Quite simply, Alicia “Ya-Yah”Townsend can summed up thusly: She does what she does, the way she wants to do it—and if you need a box to understand that, then you'll miss her adaptability as an artist. Her talents as both a performer and writer couple Townsend's two greatest strengths as an artist. Ya-Yah's songs are written with heartfelt warmth, sung with an electric sophistication and executed with the charm of a cobra.

Alicia “Ya-Yah” Townsend's debut EP “Just Me” is now available.
